Red wines from Friuli-Venezia Giulia - The underrated red variety in northeastern Italy
Friuli-Venezia Giulia is located in northeastern Italy, nestled between the Alps, the Adriatic Sea, and the Slovenian border. Although the region is better known internationally for its excellent white wines, it is also home to a surprisingly diverse and distinctive red wine tradition. Thanks to the varied soils—from chalky slopes to gravel and clay to karst soils—and a climate with cool nights and proximity to the sea, red grape varieties can produce aromatically differentiated and elegant wines here.
Native grape varieties - Authentic characters with depth
Some of the indigenous grapes stand out in particular: Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso, for example, is a long-established variety that thrives in many parts of Friuli and is considered one of the region's most important blue grapes. These wines often display intense dark colors, aromas of blackberry and plum, and a noticeable acidity and distinctive tannins - an expression of the soil conditions and the often autumnal ripeness. Schioppettino is also typical of the region and is experiencing an exciting resurgence. Originally almost extinct, this variety is making a comeback—originating from the Prepotto area, Schioppettino produces medium-bodied to elegant red wines with fine fruit, spicy notes, and often a peppery or herbal note, accompanied by lively acidity. Another speciality of the region is Pignolo, a rare and indigenous variety native to the historic vineyards of Colli Orientali del Friuli. Pignolo produces deep dark, powerful wines with lots of tannins and a body that can develop considerable complexity and richness with appropriate ageing. Aromas of dark fruits and blackberries, paired with structure and aging potential, make Pignolo interesting for connoisseurs.
International and local additions
In addition to these native varieties, Merlot also plays an important role. In Friuli, Merlot is often the leading red variety and, thanks to the Adriatic climate and the different terroirs, is processed into velvety, fruit-driven wines that often appear softer and rounder than classic wines from cooler regions. In addition, some growing areas also produce wines made from or with proportions of international grapes such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, especially in regions such as the flatter area of the “Grave” or in the transition to the plain — these produce structured, accessible red wines that often display a more moderate style than the indigenous varieties.
Typical characteristics of Friuli red wines
Friuli red wines are rarely opulent or overly heavy. Instead, they impress with a skillful balance of fruit, minerality, fresh acidity, and often a subtle spiciness. The local varieties in particular express the character of their respective terroirs very clearly—whether in the chalky hills, the barren karst soils of the Carso, or the gravelly plains. Many of these wines develop significant depth and complexity with a little time in the glass or in the cellar, some with strong tannins, others with a fine, elegant body.
A highlight of the region - authentic indigenous red wines from Colli Orientali and Carso
The genuine indigenous red wines, such as those from areas like Colli Orientali del Friuli or Carso DOC, are considered a speciality of Friuli. In Colli Orientali, Schioppettino, Pignolo, and Refosco unfold their best characteristics - often as single-varietal wines or in small, traditional cuvées, with clear origins, authenticity, and a strong connection to the soil. Carso, on the other hand, produces wines with a rough mineral note from the Terrano variety - mineral, sometimes tart, with cherry aromas and a lively acidity. These wines impressively reflect the karst landscape on the Adriatic Sea and form an exciting contrast to the fruitier, softer wines from other parts of the region.
Why Friuli is worth discovering for red wine lovers
Those looking for red wines that are a far cry from the typical heaviness of southern Italy will find a surprisingly diverse selection in Friuli. Between vineyards stretching from the Alps to the sea, red wines with character, depth, and provenance are produced—often with the clear fingerprint of their grape and soil. The blend of local grape varieties and international influences, together with a focus on quality over quantity, makes this region a rewarding destination for anyone who wants to discover authentic Italian wines with style and provenance. Friuli shows that red wine does not always have to be loud and heavy — sometimes it is cool, mineral, elegant, and at the same time full of history and terroir. - Gerardo [TS12/25]
