Red wines from the Marche region - diversity between the Adriatic Sea and the hills
The Marche region on the east coast of Italy is an underrated treasure trove for red wine lovers. Between the rolling hills, the Adriatic coast, and the foothills of the Apennines lie vineyards that produce high-quality red wines thanks to their varied soils and mild climate. The wines of this region reflect the balance between Mediterranean warmth and Alpine freshness, making them accessible and fruity on the one hand, and complex and suitable for aging on the other.

Montepulciano - The backbone of red wines
The most important red grape variety in the Marche region is Montepulciano. It produces deep dark, full-bodied wines characterized by intense fruit aromas, especially cherry and plum. Montepulciano wines from the Marche region often have a pronounced structure, accompanied by velvety tannins and a pleasant acidity that ensures freshness and aging potential. Especially in the hills of the hinterland, these wines develop complex aromas that gain depth and elegance over time, making them true character wines of the region.

Sangiovese - elegance and versatility
Alongside Montepulciano, Sangiovese plays an important role in red wine production in the Marche region. This variety thrives particularly well on the calcareous hills and produces red wines that are lighter, more fruity, and often somewhat more elegant. Sangiovese wines from the Marche region display a delicate interplay of aromas of red berries, floral notes, and subtle spice, making them excellent table wines, but also giving them potential for aging. They are often used in cuvées with Montepulciano or smaller local varieties to achieve additional structure and complexity.

Local specialties and other varieties
The Marche region is also home to lesser-known red grape varieties that underscore the diversity of the region. These include Passerina Nera and regional variants of Cabernet Sauvignon, which are vinified in small quantities. The winemakers of the Marche region often rely on traditional methods and pay close attention to the close connection between soil, climate, and grape, giving each wine its own special personality. This diversity makes the red wines of the Marche region particularly exciting and shows that the region has more to offer than just its well-known white wines.

A highlight of the region - Rosso Piceno
Rosso Piceno is an outstanding representative of the red wines of the Marche region. This wine is often made from a combination of Montepulciano and Sangiovese grapes and represents the harmonious fusion of the two varieties. Rosso Piceno is full-bodied, aromatic, and characterized by a balanced blend of fruit, spice, and tannin. It pairs well with regional dishes such as roasts or hearty pasta sauces as well as international cuisine and has established itself as the flagship of red wine production in the Marche region.

Conclusion
The red wines of the Marche region impress with their diversity, terroir, and origin. Montepulciano and Sangiovese form the backbone, complemented by local specialties and smaller varieties. From the powerful, structured Montepulciano to the elegant Sangiovese and the harmonious Rosso Piceno, the region covers a wide range of styles. Those who want to discover Italian red wines outside the well-known wine regions will find authentic, characterful wines with history and personality in the Marche region. - Gerardo [TS12/25]
