Kerner | Grape variety
Kerner is a riesling-like new variety and has its greatest importance in Germany, although the area under cultivation there has also declined sharply. Kerner is also grown sporadically in the northern Italian region of South Tyrol, where good quality wines are produced.
The Kerner grape, a cross between Trollinger and Riesling, ripens late in the season, allowing it to benefit from the region's warm days and cool nights, which contribute to its vibrant acidity and expressive aromatics. South Tyrolean Kerner wines are renowned for their pale straw color, with hints of green, and their enticing bouquet of ripe stone fruits, citrus blossoms, and a touch of spice.
In the glass, Kerner wines from South Tyrol captivate the palate with their lively acidity, balanced by a lush, round mouthfeel. They often exhibit flavors of juicy white peach, zesty lemon, and aromatic herbs, leading to a crisp, refreshing finish that lingers on the senses.
South Tyrolean winemakers take great pride in crafting Kerner wines that reflect the terroir of the region. With meticulous attention to detail in both vineyard management and winemaking techniques, they showcase the full potential of the Kerner grape, resulting in wines that are both elegant and distinctive.
Whether enjoyed on its own as an apéritif or paired with local cuisine such as speck and cheese platters, freshwater trout, or hearty Alpine fare, Kerner wine from South Tyrol offers a captivating taste of this enchanting corner of Italy. With its crisp acidity, enticing aromatics, and vibrant flavors, Kerner remains a beloved choice among wine enthusiasts seeking a true taste of South Tyrolean terroir. - Gerardo [TS06/23]
"Although there are only 24 hectares in South Tyrol, a Kerner has already regularly made it to the coveted 3 glasses of the 'Gambero Rosso'." - Falstaff
