Story: Donnafugata | Sicily

The name Donnafugata ('Woman on the Run') refers to the novel 'Il Gattopardo' and its story of a queen who found refuge where the company's vineyards are now located. This incident was also the inspiration for the company logo.

Giacomo Rallo founded the winery with his wife Gabriella in 1983 and managed it with great vision until his death in May 2016, the fourth generation of a family that, with more than 160 years of experience in quality winemaking, revolutionized the style and perception of Sicilian wine in the world. Today José and Antonio Rallo, the fifth generation, lead a team of skilled professionals who represent the excellence of 'Made in Italy' worldwide and are always looking for new challenges.

Donnafugata has 3 production facilities in Sicily. The aging and bottling of the wines takes place in the old family cellars in Marsala. Around the Contessa Entellina estate, in the heart of western Sicily, 270 hectares of vineyards and 9 hectares of olive groves are cultivated. In addition, around the Cantina of Khamma in Pantelleria, a volcanic island between Sicily and Africa, there are 68 hectares of Zibibbo (Moscato di Alessandria), grown according to the Alberello method, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The stars of Donnafugata are the red wine Mille e una Notte and the dessert wine Ben Ryé Passito di Pantelleria DOC.

With the 2016 harvest, Donnafugata fulfills a long-awaited desire: the production of wines with the prestigious designations of origin Etna (Etna) and Cerasuolo and Frappato di Vittoria in eastern Sicily. The project, which aims to express the great potential of Sicilian wine from different areas with unique potential, includes 15 hectares of vineyards and a winery in Randazzo, on the north side of Mount Etna, and 18 hectares in Acate, in the east of the island. - Gerardo [TS07/22]
