J. Hofstätter | South Tyrol
Historical development and family identity
The J. Hofstätter winery was founded in 1907 by Josef Hofstätter in Tramin, a wine village that remains its center to this day. Josef Hofstätter was not only a winemaker but also a problem solver who soon began exporting wine beyond the borders of South Tyrol. After he died without direct descendants, his wife Maria continued to run the business. Later, his niece Luise married the long-time cellar manager Konrad Oberhofer, which eventually brought the Foradori family into the winery. Since 1992, Martin and Beatrix Foradori Hofstätter have been running the family business, now in its fourth generation, supported by the fifth generation, Niklas and Emma. Their philosophy combines exceptional locations and careful vineyard work with modern cellar technology and a sustainable approach.

Location, terroir, and climatic conditions
Hofstätter's vineyards stretch across the South Tyrolean lowlands on both sides of the Adige River and into the heights of Trentino. The altitudes range from around 250 to 850 meters, resulting in a striking climatic diversity. The soils are geologically very different: moraines, gravel, calcareous subsoil, and various types of rock give the vines great mineral depth. This diversity makes it possible to plant each grape variety exactly where it can develop its full potential - for example, Gewürztraminer in warmer, south-facing plots, Pinot Noir in cooler locations, or Sauvignon at over 800 meters. This diversity of terroir is essential for the dense and precise style of the wines.

Philosophy and viticulture strategy
A central element of Hofstätter's identity is the Vigna classification: as early as 1987, Hofstätter was one of the first wineries in South Tyrol to indicate its individual vineyards (Vigna) on the label. This origin strategy allows for precise selection and vinological differentiation at a very high level. The vineyard is cultivated in a natural way, with conservative pruning and maintenance to keep the vines healthy and stable. In the cellar, traditional and modern techniques are combined: wooden tanks, large wooden barrels, and innovative concrete champagne barrels are used. Maturation often takes place on the fine lees to promote structure and depth.

Range and variety of grape varieties
The range includes classic South Tyrolean grape varieties as well as original selections: white wines such as Gewürztraminer, Pinot Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc; red wines such as Pinot Noir, Vernatsch (Schiava), Lagrein. Hofstätter also produces modern cuvées and special lines. The “Vigna” wines come from clearly defined single vineyards such as Kolbenhof (Gewürztraminer), Unterkerschbaum (Sauvignon), and Barthenau (Pinot Nero). The winery has also expanded its terroir portfolio to southern Trentino, where particularly mineral wines are produced at high altitudes on the Maso Michei.

A special highlight: Barthenau Vigna S. Urbano Pinot Nero
A particularly prestigious and emblematic wine from Hofstätter is the Barthenau Vigna S. Urbano Pinot Nero. This Vigna selection represents the winery's uncompromising focus on origin: The Pinot comes from the historically significant Barthenau vineyard near Mazon, grows on steep slopes with optimal exposure, and matures carefully in the cellar—often on fine lees or in wood. The wine captivates with its depth, elegant fruit bouquet, and mineral tension. It is an ambassador for South Tyrolean Pinot Noir at the highest level.

Significance for South Tyrol and outlook
The J. Hofstätter winery is one of the beacons of South Tyrolean viticulture—not only because it is one of the largest family-run businesses, but also because of its consistent commitment to single-vineyard wines and sustainable innovation. With its Vigna philosophy, it has helped shape the concept of single-vineyard wines throughout South Tyrol. Under the leadership of Martin Foradori Hofstätter and the growing fifth generation, the winery is well positioned to defend its high standards and tradition of quality. In the future, further terroir projects, expansion variants, and sustainable approaches are conceivable in order to further bring the charisma of the South Tyrolean landscape into the glass. - Gerardo [TS12/25]
