Planeta - Sicily's wine landscape in one name
The name Planeta has long been synonymous with high-quality Sicilian wine. However, it not only stands for excellent wines, but also for a journey through the island's diverse landscape. From the rolling hills in the west, in the province of Agrigento, to the fertile soils of Ragusa and Syracuse and the volcanic soil of Mount Etna in the province of Catania - the Planeta winery embodies the entire spectrum of the Sicilian terroir.
The beginnings of a wine adventure
The adventure began in the mid-1980s, when three young wine lovers - Alessio, Francesca and Santi Planeta - planted their first vineyards in the Campagna of Sambuca in the province of Agrigento. The picturesque landscape of Contrada Ulmo, framed by Lake Arancio, offered ideal conditions for their ambitious plans. An ancient stone building, the Baglio, became the center of the growing business and still bears witness to the region's historic winegrowing culture today. This is where the first experiences were gained, grape varieties were tested and the foundations were laid for the impressive winery that Planeta is today.
Expansion and innovation - the winery in Menfi
With growing success, the winery was expanded. In Contrada Dispensa, in the hinterland of Menfi, more vineyards and two wineries were built. This region developed into a real testing ground for the company: At the end of the 1990s, Planeta began to explore the potential of international grape varieties such as Chardonnay, Merlot and Syrah here. In addition to these international classics, local grapes were also cultivated and refined. The joy of experimentation and the pursuit of perfection led to Planeta's wines gaining recognition not only in Italy, but worldwide.
Cerasuolo di Vittoria - a milestone in the province of Ragusa
Even further south, in the province of Ragusa near the town of Vittoria, lies the Dorilli winery. Here, Planeta concentrates on a particularly traditional Sicilian grape variety: Cerasuolo di Vittoria. With 28 hectares of vines planted here, the estate produces its first DOCG wine - an outstanding achievement for the region. The combination of Nero d'Avola and Frappato produces a fruity, elegant red wine that reflects the Mediterranean soul of Sicily. Here, too, the winery focuses on a harmonious combination of tradition and modernity: an old farmhouse forms the heart of the winery, which is equipped with state-of-the-art technology.
Mount Etna - a new challenge
Planeta is known for its innovative spirit and constant search for new challenges. So it was only a matter of time before the winery expanded its activities to include the extraordinary soils of Mount Etna. The volcanic subsoil and cool climate provide a unique terroir for cultivating grape varieties such as Nerello Mascalese and Carricante. These high-altitude vineyards allow for a completely different style that further emphasizes the diversity and potential of Sicily.
A winery with vision
Today, Planeta is one of the most respected wineries in Italy. The family has managed to preserve Sicily's winemaking tradition while boldly breaking new ground. The skillful combination of indigenous and international grape varieties, traditional cultivation methods and state-of-the-art cellar technology results in wines that reflect the unmistakable identity of the island. The winery attaches great importance to sustainability in order to preserve Sicily's natural resources for future generations.
Planeta is more than just a winery - it is a symbol of the diversity, history and future of Sicilian wine. Each bottle tells its own story and takes wine lovers on a flavorful journey through one of the most fascinating wine regions in the world. - Gerardo [02/25]
"Planeta is a “Viaggio in Sicilia”, a journey started by several members of the second generation, who were in their twenties at the time, in 1994 under the guidance of Alessio Planeta and the protective care of founder Diego Planeta at the first family estate Ulmo in Menfi. The journey then continued, with further wineries being founded in the island's most inspiring wine-growing regions. Last but not least, this “Viaggio in Sicilia” is also a sustainable journey, as all wineries and vineyards have been managed according to the SOStain® sustainability protocol since 2011." - Falstaff
