Story: Terre degli Svevi | Basilicata
Page: 1/1
History and naming
The history of Terre degli Svevi is closely linked to the Basilicata region and the historic Staufer family. Re Manfredi, son of Frederick II, liked to retreat to the region's vineyards, and his historical significance is reflected in the Aglianico wine of the same name. Dante mentions Manfredi in the Divine Comedy, and the wine honors this traditional figure, who stands for political independence and elegance. Other historical figures such as Flordelis and Bianca Lancia are also honored in the wines, giving the range a cultural reference.
Terroir and climate
The vineyards of Terre degli Svevi are located on the slopes of the extinct volcano Vulture, which towers over the surrounding area at 1,300 meters. The volcanic soils, rich in tuff, limestone, and clay, give the grapes a special minerality and structure. The continental climate, with hot summers, cold winters, and large temperature fluctuations, supports the slow ripening of the grapes and promotes the development of intense aromas. The combination of soil, light, and microclimate makes the terroir unique in the Mediterranean region.
Vineyards and grape varieties
The winery cultivates around 30 hectares of Aglianico vineyards with 20-year-old vines trained using the Guyot method, as well as a further 22 hectares with 10-year-old vines trained using the Cordone Speronato method. Maschito is home to the 6-hectare “Serpara” cru vineyard, where only the oldest vines, over 40 years old, are used to produce the top wine. The range is complemented by white grape varieties such as Müller-Thurgau and Gewürztraminer on 20 hectares, which produce particularly fresh and aromatic white wines.
Production and style
Terre degli Svevi combines tradition with modern cellar technology. The grapes are carefully selected, partially vinified, and then aged to produce complex, long-lasting wines. The red Aglianico wines are characterized by their structure, elegance, and spicy minerality, while the white varieties are fresh, aromatic, and expressive. The wines reflect the characteristics of the Vulture terroir and demonstrate the close connection between nature, history, and artisanal quality.
Conclusion
Terre degli Svevi produces wines that are deeply rooted in the history and culture of Basilicata, while at the same time representing modern winemaking techniques and the highest quality standards. The combination of historical references, exceptional terroir, and careful processing makes these wines authentic ambassadors for their region, earning them great recognition both nationally and internationally. - Gerardo [TS09/25]
