Abruzzo | Wine region
Cerasuolo d'Abruzzo - The rosy specialty of Abruzzo
Abruzzo - a region nestled between the rugged mountains of the Apennines and the gentle coastline of the Adriatic Sea - is known for its full-bodied red wines, mineral-rich white wines, and one very special specialty: Cerasuolo d'Abruzzo. This wine impressively embodies the terroir of the region, combining freshness with depth.Origin and type of wineCerasuolo d'Abruzzo is a rosé wine or “rosato,” made primarily from the Montepulciano d'Abruzzo grape. The DOC “Cerasuolo d'Abruzzo” was only officially established in 2010, after the lighter, pink-colored variant of Montepulciano d'Abruzzo had not previously been classified separately. Cerasuolo is typically characterized by a much more intense color than many other rosés: even a short maceration period on the highly pigmented Montepulciano skins is enough to produce a cherry red to salmon red hue.

Character & Taste
What makes Cerasuolo d'Abruzzo so special is its remarkable balance. Its color is a deep cherry red, which can transition to light raspberry or salmon tones depending on the vinification process. Its bouquet exudes aromas of red fruits such as sour cherry, raspberry, and strawberry, often accompanied by delicate floral notes—such as rose petals—complemented by subtle spice and mineral nuances. On the palate, the wine is juicy and fresh, but also has a noticeable structure, as the Montepulciano grape contributes a fine tannin structure that gives it more body than many typical rosés. The alcohol content of high-quality selections is usually between 13% and 14%.

This combination makes Cerasuolo d'Abruzzo a very versatile wine that works well on its own, but also pairs well with lighter dishes or seafood, poultry, or Mediterranean cuisine.

History & Significance
The history of Cerasuolo is closely linked to the Montepulciano d'Abruzzo grape variety: in the past, winemakers used the saignée method, whereby they drew off part of the must during red wine pressing, which was then fermented further - resulting in a lighter, pink-colored wine. Until 2010, this rosé was still part of the Montepulciano d'Abruzzo DOC and did not have its own classification. However, with the establishment of the Cerasuolo d'Abruzzo DOC, it was given the status of an independent wine category. The region where Cerasuolo is grown covers all four provinces of Abruzzo: Chieti, L'Aquila, Pescara, and Teramo.

An outstanding producer: Azienda Agricola Valentini
One name that must be mentioned when talking about Cerasuolo d'Abruzzo is Valentini. The winery from Loreto Aprutino in the province of Pescara has earned a legendary reputation worldwide with its Cerasuolo.

Some key features of their approach are particularly noteworthy: Valentini uses only Montepulciano grapes (100%) for its Cerasuolo. The winery takes a very gentle approach to vinification, with minimal intervention. Fermentation occurs spontaneously with indigenous yeasts, without filtration and without strict temperature control. The wine is then aged in large, old wooden barrels, which gives it additional complexity. In terms of alcohol and maturation, Valentini's Cerasuolo can reach higher alcohol levels - around 14%, for example - and it is certainly suitable for aging. These wines are therefore not just simple summer rosés, but complex wines with potential for development. Overall, Valentini Cerasuolo symbolizes the combination of living tradition and uncompromising quality in Abruzzo.

Local characteristics: Terroir & climate
A very relevant characteristic of Abruzzo is its geographical diversity: vineyards are located partly high up in the Apennines and partly closer to the coast. These altitudes and the proximity to the Adriatic Sea cause a significant temperature difference between day and night. Such climatic conditions favor slow ripening of the grapes, preserve acidity, and promote the development of aromas and concentration—ideal for the intense rosé style of Cerasuolo.

Conclusion
Cerasuolo d'Abruzzo is much more than just a simple rosé: it is a true expression of the Montepulciano grape and the Abruzzo landscape. Its intense color, balanced fruit profile, and structure make it a wine full of character that offers both lightness and depth. With producers such as Valentini, who use traditional techniques with great care, this wine shows the potential that Abruzzo has to offer. For wine lovers looking for something a little off the beaten track when it comes to rosé, Cerasuolo d'Abruzzo is definitely worth discovering. - Gerardo [TS12/25]
