Hail damage in 2019
In 2019, there was a severe hailstorm in the Bolzano Gries area, which devastated the vineyards and affected the production of Lagrein grapes. Lagrein is a red wine grape variety native to the Alto Adige region in Italy and is particularly popular in the area around Bolzano/Bozen.

The hailstorm in Bolzano Gries caused major damage to the Lagrein vineyards, resulting in a significant reduction in grape yields. The hailstones can damage the vines, pierce and break open the berries, which can affect the quality of the grapes and reduce the overall harvest.

Due to the effects of the hail on Lagrein production in Bolzano Gries, many vineyards, including those of Muri-Gries, were unable to produce enough high-quality grapes to make their Lagrein Riserva for the 2019 vintage. Lagrein Riserva is a premium wine made from selected grapes, often matured over a long period of time and represents the pinnacle of Lagrein production.

Due to the lower grape yields and the loss of quality caused by the hail, Muri-Gries and other producers in the Bolzano Gries area were unable to produce the Lagrein Riserva of the 2018 vintage. This unfortunate event led to a gap in the availability of Lagrein Riserva wines from Muri-Gries and other producers for this year.

Built in the 12th century by Augustinians, who planted vines early on, it was handed over to the Benedictine monks from Muri in Switzerland in 1845.
