The history of Muri-Gries: a tradition of excellence
Muri-Gries, a renowned winery in South Tyrol, looks back on a long and proud history. Since its foundation in 1027 by the Benedictine monks of the Muri monastery, Muri-Gries has made a name for itself for outstanding wines and a unique winemaking tradition.

The Muri-Gries winery is located in the picturesque surroundings of Bolzano, in the midst of the breathtaking landscape of the South Tyrolean vineyards. The location offers ideal conditions for growing vines, with a unique terroir characterized by sun-drenched slopes and cool breezes. This interplay of climate and soil gives the wines of Muri-Gries their unmistakable quality and characteristics.

The vineyards of Muri-Gries include the historic Klosteranger with its almost 2.7 hectares as well as various vineyards in the best locations in the municipalities of Bolzano and Appiano. This results in a total vineyard area of 60 hectares, which is characterized by the best terroir, excellent soil quality and favourable climatic conditions. No wonder, because year after year the best Lagrein in South Tyrol is produced on this basis.

In addition to the world-famous Lagrein Riserva Abtei, Lagrein is mainly produced as a red wine, flanked by a small amount of Lagrein Rosè and various high-quality red and white wines. These include the Terlaner Pinot Blanc, Pinot Noir and St. Magdalener as well as the sweet wine specialty Rosenmuskateller and, more recently, the Lagrein Riserva Klosteranger, which forms the keystone of the Muri-Gries quality pyramid. - Gerardo [TS02/24]

"History, tradition, research - this incipit aptly describes the ancient Muri-Gries monastery winery. In 1407, Archduke Leopold donated Gries Castle to homeless monks, who turned it into a monastery. The old chapel was converted into a cellar - today the Lagrein matures there. Christian Werth was one of the first to plant this variety. He restructured the old vineyards and selected the highest quality clones." - Gambero Rosso
