Lagrein - a grape variety with identity
Lagrein is an autochthonous grape variety of South Tyrol, closely rooted in the region and unmistakable in character. Unlike international grape varieties, it has an independent, down-to-earth style. Muri-Gries has always been particularly dedicated to this variety. The monastery winery pursues the goal of preserving and refining the typical characteristics of Lagrein and placing them at the heart of its wine philosophy: its rustic elegance, depth and authenticity.
Alongside Vernatsch, Lagrein is the only indigenous red wine variety in South Tyrol - and is historically rooted in Gries. The monastery winery has had its own grape material adapted to the microclimate for over six centuries. This genetic heritage, consisting of over a hundred different Lagrein varieties, is carefully selected and monitored today. Around 20 varieties are under constant observation in order to select the best biotypes for new plantings. The aim is always to further sharpen the character of the Lagrein and improve its quality.
A wide range with a clear signature
Muri-Gries today offers a wide range of wines that appeal to both classic and modern tastes. In addition to traditional grape varieties such as Vernatsch or Pinot Blanc, there are also innovative interpretations, such as Sauvignon Blanc or Rosenmuskateller. However, the Lagrein remains the centerpiece. From the fresh Rosato to the structured Riserva, each variation reflects the craftsmanship and deep connection with the terroir.
For Muri-Gries, Lagrein is more than just a grape variety - it is an expression of regional identity. The monastery winery does not see Lagrein as a substitute, but as the future. Cultivation is carried out with the utmost care, and vinification combines state-of-the-art technology with traditional methods. The result is a wine with a strong character, origin and signature.
Lagrein Rosato - The Kretzer
Lagrein Rosato, traditionally known as “Kretzer”, is a young, fresh wine that is ready to drink just a few months after the harvest. With its lively fruit and light structure, it is ideal for warm days and uncomplicated occasions. It is matured 100% in stainless steel tanks, which preserves its freshness and aromatic clarity. The term “Kretzer” comes from the old word “Kretze”, a basket through which the must used to be strained. Today, Rosato accounts for around ten percent of the winery's total Lagrein production.
Lagrein Classic - The everyday wine with depth
The classic Lagrein from Muri-Gries forms the backbone of production and accounts for around 70% of the Lagrein volume. After fermentation in stainless steel tanks, the wine matures partly in stainless steel and partly in large wooden barrels. The result is an accessible, yet characterful wine: ruby red to garnet red, fruity and spicy on the nose, with soft tannins and an elegant structure. A typical Lagrein that gives pleasure every day.
Lagrein Riserva Abtei - an expression of the highest maturity
The Lagrein Riserva Abtei has been one of Muri-Gries' top products since 1989. Around 20% of the best Lagrein batches are selected for it. After fermentation, the wine matures for 18 to 20 months in small wooden barrels and is released onto the market three years after the harvest at the earliest. It impresses with its intense, dark ruby red color, complex aromas of dark berries, cherries and plums, accompanied by notes of chocolate and coffee. On the palate, it is fleshy, dense and full of finesse - a Lagrein with depth and great ageing potential.
Lagrein Riserva Klosteranger - The essence of the village
The Lagrein Riserva Klosteranger is the most prestigious wine from Muri-Gries. The Klosteranger vineyard, located directly next to the historic monastery, looks back on a history dating back to the 18th century. Protected by the monastery walls and characterized by a unique terroir, a wine of exceptional depth and expressiveness is produced here. The “Weingarten Klosteranger” is a living symbol of the interplay between origin, history and craftsmanship - a Lagrein that sets standards both in the region and internationally. - Gerardo [TS05/25]
