Blog: Cellarmaster Stephan Filippi about the 2022 vintage | Kellerei Bozen

'A truly extraordinary vintage!' says Filippi of the 2022 harvest year. 'After 30 years of experience, I can say that only four or five vintages are comparable to 2022. Water scarcity, exceptionally low temperatures during the winter months, and above-average summer heat made for wonderful grapes.'

'Water already became scarce in winter,' Filippi said 'rainfall and temperature levels were below average, and the cold weather that lasted into spring further delayed budbreak. Warmer weather beginning in May then, in turn, accelerated subsequent phenological stages. Flowering coincided with a precipitation-free period with mild temperatures, allowing for good fruit set. Then came the summer... No one really knew how the grapes would react.'

In fact, the summer of 2022 in South Tyrol went down in history as the second warmest since records began in 1850. 'Our salvation was the considerable temperature fluctuations between day and night that are typical of our subcontinental climate' says the oenologist in this regard.

In addition, it was very fortunate to have sufficient irrigation water, which was not granted to other Italian regions. All this has led to an earlier ripening of the grapes. The 350 hectares of vineyards of the Bolzano Winery start on the valley floor at 200, rise to 1,000 meters above sea level, and lie at the foot of the Dolomites: At lower altitudes, grapes ripen about 8 to 10 days earlier, while at higher altitudes they ripen 16 to 18 days later.

The 2022 harvest began earlier than usual. The white varieties Sauvignon, Pinot Grigio and Chardonnay were already harvested in August, Gewürztraminer and Goldmuskateller finally towards the end of September.

From September 10, it was the turn of the red grapes: first Pinot Noir, then the classic Vernatsch, then Lagrein for the top wine Taber, which for 22 years has been awarded 3 glasses in the Italian wine guide Gambero Rosso. In the first weeks of October, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon were harvested, and in the third week of October the harvest season was finally over.

The result is crisp, healthy berries that will produce well-structured white wines that are slightly alcoholic due to rapid ripening. The tendency of moderate acidity of wines from higher altitudes should provide an intense nose. The red wine varieties, with their nicely pronounced berry aromas and good structure, will also produce long-lasting wines.

'Especially for Magdalener made from Vernatsch grapes, we expect a great year - as well as for Taber, since the Lagrein grape thrives especially well at high temperatures. The Merlot 2022 also promises to be a real gem and should come up with one or two surprises. In any case, an extremely strong 22 vintage, which will produce powerful wines. You can confidently forget a few bottles or barriques in the cellar and still get a really great wine after a few years,' says Stephan Filippi. - Gerardo [TS03/23]
