Kellerei Bozen | South Tyrol
Young and full of visions for the future but at the same time rooted in the strong tradition of two historic wineries - this is how the Bolzano Winery presents itself today. In 2001, the Gries Winery and the St. Magdalena Winery merged to form the youngest winery in South Tyrol. This merger, desired by the members, was aimed at achieving even greater popularity among connoisseurs with the already successful and recognized quality wines. Dynamic, consistent and supported by decades of experience, characteristic and typical South Tyrolean wines are produced. Born from the merger of the wineries of Gries (since 1908) and St. Magdalena (since 1930), the winery ranks among the absolute top of South Tyrolean wine producers. 200 members supply the grapes for the high-quality wines from South Tyrol's provincial capital, which have won awards time and again. Enjoy the popular wines such as Lagrein, St. Magdalener and the white wines from the premium sites around Bolzano. - Gerardo [TS12/22]
"Since September 2018, the Bolzano winery has given itself a whole new look: after years of effort, the new cellar building in the Moritzing district was completed. The 2018 vintage has already been pressed in the new Bolzano winery. Particular importance was attached to the issue of sustainability in the planning of the new building: Thus, the new building complies with the 'ClimateHouse Wine' standard. Underground cellars and storage rooms allow natural cooling and vertical, gravity-based processing of the grapes. The roof planted with vines allows the imposing new building to blend harmoniously with the terrain, so the Bolzano Winery is already being referred to as 'the winery in the vineyard.' A visit to the new winery Bolzano is an experience!" - Falstaff

In 1908, farmers from Gries decided to take the step towards independence and dared to found a winegrowers' cooperative. From the beginning, the goal was to vinify and market the Lagrein variety, typical of Gries. In the years following World War II, the Gries Winery was able to establish itself primarily through the production of light Lagrein Kretzer (rosé). With the sales crisis in the 70s and early 80s, the Gries Winery switched its production from quantity to quality and was able to score especially with the parade variety Lagrein. In 1930, 18 winegrowers from St. Magdalena, St. Justina and Leitach also founded a cooperative. The leading variety was the St.Magdalener - wine from the Vernatsch grape. Already in the first years, efforts were made to gain a foothold in the export market. With success. In 1971, the DOC regulation was introduced to limit and enhance the value of the Magdalener area. At the end of the 1970s, however, the crisis in South Tyrolean viticulture came. Nevertheless, the Magdalena Winery managed to hold its own. Consistent quality policy was the solution. In 2001 followed probably the most important step since the existence of the two wineries Gries and St.Magdalena: The merger. Today, the Bolzano winery with its two locations Gries and St.Magdalena is one of the absolute top wineries in the region.
The promenades adorned with Mediterranean vegetation that cross the residential areas, the dazzling green of the gardens and vines between the houses, the three cable cars that allow you to reach in less than 10 minutes the magnificent alpine landscape at an altitude of over 1000 m that surrounds Bolzano, all this underlines the agricultural and mountain character of the city. If you stay in Bolzano for a few days, you will have the opportunity not only to enjoy the atmosphere and the natural landscape of the city and to immerse yourself in its cultural and artistic treasures, but also to taste the typical gastronomic specialties and the exquisite wines, including the city's own Lagrein and St. Magdalener varieties. Lagrein was already known in the Middle Ages: its color is a bright, strong red with garnet ruby reflections, its taste is round with forest berry base tones, hints of tobacco and a light cocoa scent. Magdalener is a wine that owes its name to the corresponding hill at the northern gate of Bolzano, which is a real vineyard. It consists of a blend of Vernatsch with small amounts of Lagrein or Pinot Noir, resulting in a harmonious, balanced wine that is very popular for its purple color and its scent of ripe cherries, violets and almonds.
320 hectares of Bolzano's best vineyards, between 240 and 800 meters above sea level, are united in the Bolzano winery. One of South Tyrol's most traditional wines, St. Magdalener, thrives on the sandy, loose, well-ventilated soils on the warm slopes at the foot of the Ritten. Lagrein, South Tyrol's best-known and most characterful red wine, is native to the permeable, easily warmed rubble soils of Gries and Moritzing. The variety of sites and growing areas allow for an extensive range of exquisite quality wines. - Gerardo [TS12/22]
"The administration of the new Bolzano winery is located at the headquarters of the old winery Gries in the Bolzano district of the same name. A blue and yellow archway above the entrance unmistakably points the way to underground cellars where the wines are languishing toward their maturity. The cellar of the former St. Magdalener winery at the other end of Bolzano, which was newly built shortly before the merger, has not been abandoned, however. It continues to be used for St. Magdalener wines." - Jens Priewe
'The Bolzano winery is not resting on its laurels. Despite quite a few awards and great market successes, it is always aiming higher. Recently it was announced that new preparation facilities are planned, where production will be merged with the winery Gries. Like concentrates, the wines of the winegrowers' cooperative condense all the merits of the typical Bolzano grape varieties." - Gambero Rosso
