Blog: Cellarmaster Martin Lemayr on the 2022 vintage | Colterenzio

Flawless, healthy and fully ripe grapes made for happy faces among winemakers and cellar masters in the fall of 2022. The first wines are now in the bottle. What can we expect from the 2022 vintage?

'A great vintage,' says Schreckbichl cellarmaster Martin Lemayr. 'I must also say that it was a very nice, smooth harvest season. Our 300 members have harvested healthy, beautiful and fully ripe grapes through the bank. For us in the cellar, it is a pleasure to be able to work with such a good harvest.'

Warm spring and hot summer months characterized the 2022 wine year, with budbreak and also flowering starting earlier than the long-term average. The dry summer months caused hardly any problems, as the vine is generally very heat-resistant and most of the vineyards are equipped with drip irrigation, which meant that water could be supplied selectively and at specific points.

The grapes showed exceptionally good ripeness, good sugar levels and somewhat reduced acidity. This is now also reflected in the wines: 'In general, the wines of the 2022 vintage are very full-bodied, rich and have powerful, very mature fruit aromas. The acidity is balanced. We paid particular attention to the latter during the harvest. For each variety, we made sure to harvest the grapes before the acidity drops, so that the wines benefit from the full aromatics'

According to Lemayr, the big winners of the 2022 vintage also include the red wines, especially the late-ripening varieties such as Merlot and Cabernet. They were able to enjoy ideal weather conditions in the fall, good sunlight and sinking evening temperatures for a very long time, which allowed them to reach optimal ripeness. 'These conditions allowed us to stretch out the harvest and really pick every parcel of the vineyard at optimal ripeness,' Lemayr explains. 'The red wines have excellent tannin quality, which gives the wines a lot of depth, structure, richness and opulence.

Martin Lemayr is enthusiastic about the first results in the cellar and ventures a look into the future: 'Due to the powerful and very high-quality tannin presence, these are wines that can age particularly well and for a long time. Some of them are already accessible, but their full potential will only unfold after a few months or years, depending on the variety and aging. I'm already particularly looking forward to that!'

At the same time, 2022 was also an important teaching year, Lemayr recalls: 'The year was characterized by heat and drought and showed us in this respect what we have to prepare for in the future, as climate change progresses. We responded well this year, the winegrowers did an excellent job, and we harvested and processed the grapes at the right time. In the future, we will have to pay even more attention to all these details,' says Lemayr. - Gerardo [TS03/23]
