A wine dream from the south: Cirò - Calabria's wine specialty
When you think of wine from the “heel” of Italy, it's hard to ignore Calabria. This sun-drenched, ancient landscape combines Mediterranean warmth, steep coastlines, mountains, and historic wine-growing culture—and these ingredients produce a wine that many connoisseurs consider to be the classic expression of the region: Cirò. This wine, classified under the Cirò DOC designation of origin, symbolizes Calabria in a unique way and reflects both its history and its geographical characteristics.

Where Cirò comes from: land, climate, and vines
The Cirò wine region is located in the province of Crotone, not far from the Ionian coast. The hills and partly barren soils, combined with Calabria's Mediterranean climate—hot, dry summers and mild winters—provide the ideal conditions for robust, indigenous grape varieties. This region is particularly suited to vines such as Gaglioppo, which produce the characteristic red Cirò, as well as whiter varieties such as Greco Bianco for the white and rosé versions. The special sunny location on the Ionian coast and the often windy proximity to the sea ensure that the grapes ripen while retaining their freshness and spice. This combination of warmth and maritime influence gives the wines — especially Cirò — a southern, intense character and makes them unmistakable.

Cirò wine: style, taste, and variety
Cirò is not a one-dimensional wine: the DOC allows white wines, rosés, and above all red wines—the latter being the best known and most frequently produced variety. Red Cirò is usually based on the Gaglioppo grape, often supplemented with small proportions of local or international grape varieties. In the glass, Cirò often displays a deep ruby red color, powerful fruit, and remarkable warmth—a wine that is both Mediterranean and rustic. It presents dark berries, sometimes spicy, earthy nuances, and a characteristic density typical of the warm climate and indigenous grape. Its tannins can be present and robust, yet it often remains accessible and convivial thanks to its Mediterranean structure. This energy and authenticity make Cirò a wine that never denies its origins. Depending on the sun, vintage, and aging, the style and expression vary—from accessible, fruit-driven red wines to powerful, long-lasting wines. This flexible character makes Cirò versatile: sometimes an uncomplicated companion for barbecues, sometimes a serious wine for moments of enjoyment.

History and change: From ancient times to modern Calabria
The tradition of winegrowing in Calabria goes back a long way—to the time of the Greek colonization of Magna Graecia. During this era, the settlers brought their vines with them, laying the foundation for a long tradition of winemaking. Cirò has been a DOC wine since 1969, and it is only in recent decades that the region has experienced a renaissance: winemakers are beginning to focus more on quality and authenticity rather than mass production and cheap wine. In the past, the reputation of Calabrian wines was tarnished by mass production and low quality standards. But in recent years, a rethink has taken place: indigenous grape varieties such as Gaglioppo and Greco Bianco have returned to the forefront, and wineries have invested in cellar technology and sustainable winemaking. Wines produced in this way have also gained recognition outside Italy and have helped to redefine Calabria.

An example of quality and revitalization: Librandi
Librandi is a particularly noteworthy winery that exemplifies Calabria's revitalization and commitment to quality. The estate cultivates traditional grape varieties such as Gaglioppo and Greco Bianco and, through careful vinification, produces wines that combine character, origin, and modern oenology. Particularly well-known is Cirò, which Librandi offers in red, white, and rosé versions—each in varietal or classic versions. The winery's white wine, a Cirò Bianco made from 100% Greco Bianco, is clear and fresh, with delicate citrus and floral notes, making it an excellent interpretation of Calabria's white side. Librandi shows what is possible when tradition and modern winemaking are combined — wines that are not only appreciated regionally, but also recognized beyond Italy's borders.

Why Cirò is a wine with soul
Cirò is not a standardized mass-produced wine, but a wine that feels its roots: in the Calabrian sun, in the heat of summer, in the salty sea breeze. It embodies the terroir, history, and passion of the people who produce it. At a time when many wine regions are pursuing international grape varieties and homogeneous flavors, Cirò remains authentic—raw, honest, and full of character. If you want to discover Calabria, you should start with a glass of Cirò. It combines tradition with modern winemaking techniques, warmth with structure, and offers an insight into one of Italy's oldest wine regions—in a glass, from the south. - Gerardo [TS12/25]
