Calabria | Wine region
In the tip of Italy's boot, apart from tourism, which is almost typical for Italy, a prosperous agriculture thrives and flourishes. Orange groves, olive plantations and vineyards enrich the image of this region, which is predominantly dominated by mountain massifs. These cause a very different climate within the region with the typical Mediterranean climate on the coasts and hot summers and cold, rainy winters on the heights in the interior. Numerous sites in the region are ideal for growing citrus fruits, olives, vegetables and vines. A legend tells that athletes of Magna Grecia, returning from one of the first Olympiads, toasted with Krimisa wine from the zone of today's Cirò. Consequently, the wine-growing tradition of the region can look back on several millennia. - Gerardo
"Fortunately, there are still a few historic wineries and a handful of capable new winemakers who are proving the expressive diversity of Gaglioppo with excellent bottles." - Slow Wine

Viticulture in Calabria, a region in the south of Italy, has a long and eventful history. The region has ideal conditions for growing grapes, with warm summers and mild winters, as well as plenty of sunshine and rainfall in the right amounts.
Calabria is known for its autochthonous grape varieties such as Gaglioppo, Magliocco and Nerello. Gaglioppo is the most widespread variety in the region and is mainly produced in the Ciro area. Magliocco and Nerello are ancient varieties that have been grown in Calabria for centuries. The wine growing areas in Calabria are divided into three regions: Tyrrhenian Coast, Ionian Coast and Sila. The Tyrrhenian Coast is known for its wines made from the Gaglioppo variety, the Ionian Coast is known for its wines made from the Magliocco variety and the Sila is known for its wines made from the Nerello variety.
In recent years, viticulture in Calabria has developed greatly and many winemakers rely on modern technologies and methods to make their wines even better. For example, they use modern cellar technology and age their wines longer to achieve more depth and complexity. There are also more and more winemakers who specialize in organic and sustainable farming. Some winemakers in Calabria have also begun to grow international grape varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay to diversify their offerings and meet the tastes of different customers.
Overall, viticulture in Calabria has developed impressively in recent years and the region has established itself as one of the most interesting and promising wine-growing areas in Italy. The diversity of autochthonous grape varieties and the combination of traditional and modern techniques make the wines from Calabria special and unique. - Gerardo [TS01/23]
