La Crotta di Vegneron | Aosta
Origins and cooperative spirit
The La Crotta di Vegneron cooperative was founded in 1980 by around 25 dedicated winegrowers. Their goal was clear: to preserve viticulture on small plots of land, which would otherwise have been lost in this alpine region. Over the years, the number of members has grown to over 70—clear evidence of the vitality and community spirit of this project. Deeply rooted in the region, these winegrowers have always strived to fully exploit the potential of the steep vineyards through careful work and collective commitment.

The terroir in the heart of the Aosta Valley
The vineyards of La Crotta di Vegneron are located in the municipality of Chambave, at an altitude of between 500 and 850 meters above sea level. This alpine terroir is characterized by steep slopes, often cultivated manually—there is hardly any room for machinery here. The climate is dry with marked temperature fluctuations between warm days and comparatively cool nights in summer, which promotes slow, even ripening of the grapes. These conditions favor low disease pressure and allow for gentle, environmentally friendly vineyard management with as little chemical intervention as possible. In addition, the grapes come from two important DOC areas: Chambave (including Châtillon, Saint Vincent, Saint-Denis, and Verrayes) and Nus (Quart, Fénis).

Focus on indigenous and traditional grape varieties
La Crotta di Vegneron's philosophy is deeply rooted in the promotion of indigenous grape varieties, above all Petit Rouge, Fumin, and Vien de Nus, but also Muscat de Chambave and Nus Malvoisie. At the same time, the cooperative also focuses on traditional “international” vines such as Pinot Noir, Gamay, and Müller-Thurgau, which thrive in the alpine climate. This combination enables the cooperative to preserve the authentic heritage of the region while offering a certain stylistic diversity.

The range - from classic to extraordinary
La Crotta di Vegneron presents an impressively wide range: still white and red wines, Passito dessert wines, sparkling wines under the label “Quatremille mètres Vins d'altitude” and grappas. The DOC wines include Fumin “Esprit Follet,” Pinot Noir, Müller-Thurgau, Chambave Muscat, Nus Malvoisie (Pinot Grigio), and many more. The wines are produced with great care, combining modern cellar technology with traditional know-how - each step is carried out with great attention to detail in order to preserve the unique characteristics of the terroir.

A special highlight: Nus Malvoisie
Particularly noteworthy is Nus Malvoisie, a white wine made from 100% Pinot Grigio grapes grown in the municipality of Nus. The wine matures for several months in stainless steel tanks, where it is stored “sur lie” and stirred several times (“batonnage”), which gives it additional complexity. Its bouquet is intense and fruity with notes of ripe pear, apple, honey, and English candy - on the palate, it is full-bodied, dry, and well-structured, with a pleasantly flavorful finish. Thanks to its alpine origins and careful aging, this wine is ideal as an aperitif, with white meat dishes, or with vegetable soups.

Significance and outlook
La Crotta di Vegneron is more than just a winery—it is a living testament to heroic mountain viticulture. The cooperative contributes significantly to the preservation and appreciation of the historic, often marginal vineyards in the Aosta Valley. With its blend of traditional grape varieties, sustainable vineyard work, and modern cellar technology, it makes an important contribution to further raising the profile of the Aosta Valley in the world of wine. For wine lovers looking for something special, La Crotta di Vegneron is a fascinating destination: you don't just drink “wine,” you taste Alpine history, community, and the authentic echo of an extraordinary terroir. - Gerardo [TS11/25]
