Torrevento - a winery with vision and history
The Torrevento winery is located in the north of Apulia, nestled in the rugged and impressive landscape of Murgia. Today, the company cultivates an area of around 400 hectares, making it one of the most important producers in the region. The vineyards are located on barren, stony karst soils which, in combination with underground watercourses and the typical Mediterranean climate with warm summers and cool winters, create ideal conditions for winegrowing. The vines grow at altitudes between 400 and 600 meters above sea level, just a few kilometers from the Adriatic coast. The constant wind that blows through the region provides natural ventilation for the vines - a fact to which Torrevento owes its name: “Tower of the Wind”.
From the lecture hall to the vineyards
The history of the Torrevento winery is closely linked to the name Francesco Liantonio. The former lecturer in marketing and commerce at the University of Bari decided to radically change course in the 1980s. He took over the family farm and led it into a new era with a clear vision. Through targeted investments in modern cellar technology, the renewal of the vineyards and a strong focus on quality, he turned Torrevento into one of the best-known wineries in Apulia. The combination of scientific know-how, respect for tradition and a deep connection with the Murgia region formed a success story that is now recognized far beyond Italy's borders.
Location, climate and philosophy
The winery is located in the heart of the Alta Murgia National Park, at the foot of Castel del Monte - the mysterious castle of Frederick II, whose octagonal shape inspired the Torrevento logo. The vineyards cover around 400 hectares at an altitude of 400 to 600 meters and benefit from the region's unique microclimate. The proximity to the Adriatic Sea ensures constant winds that evenly ventilate the vines. The stony karst soils of the plateau are permeable and, in combination with underground watercourses, ideal for growing demanding grape varieties. The name ‘Torrevento’ - ‘Tower of the Wind’ - is a poetic reference to this natural balance.
Historical foundations meet modern technology
At the heart of the winery is an old Benedictine monastery from the 18th century, which now houses the modern winery. Underneath the monastery are rock cellars that offer constantly cool temperatures and a stable climate - perfect conditions for maturing the wines. Torrevento knows how to harmoniously combine historical structures and modern technology without losing touch with the region. This combination of innovation and preservation has shaped the company's self-image to this day.
Focus on indigenous grape varieties
Torrevento deliberately concentrates on the cultivation and promotion of indigenous grape varieties such as Nero di Troia, Bombino Bianco, Aglianico, Primitivo and Pampanuto. These authentic vines reflect the character of Murgia and Apulia in a special way. Outstanding wines such as the single-varietal Vigna Pedale, a Nero di Troia full of character, and the Bolonero, a cuvée of Aglianico and Nero di Troia, have been awarded the coveted “Three Glasses” by Gambero Rosso several times. Such successes underline Torrevento's claim to create wines with a profile and origin - authentic, long-lasting and unmistakable. - Gerardo [TS06/25]
"Torrevento was established in an old 17th century monastery in the heart of the Alta Murgia National Park, at the foot of the famous octagonal Castel del Monte of the Hohenstaufen King Frederick II. The winery has been owned by the Liantonio family since 1913. Today Torrevento covers 500 hectares of vineyards in Puglia, promoting the autochthonous grape varieties of the region and following a production philosophy based on sustainability, research and quality." - Falstaff
