Since 1800 the Cavalieri family has been dedicated to the cultivation of wheat in deliberately selected fields in the heart of Puglia. The agricultural crisis after the unification of Italy (1861) did not ensure the family the usual comfort that until then had resulted from the cultivation of durum wheat, hence the need to venture first in the foreign trade of this particular wheat and then in the construction of mills dedicated to the best milling of durum wheat. In 1872 Andrea Cavalieri started this commercial enterprise. - Gerardo
