Puglia | Red Wine

Varied coasts, manifold cultural treasures and wonderful, powerful wines characterize Puglia with its capital Bari, important port and university city. The name goes back to the Pugliese; a tribe of the Oscians. The area is one of the oldest wine-growing regions in the world, as the Phoenicians and Greeks planted vines here 3,000 years ago. The Romans particularly appreciated the wine from Tarentum (port city of Taranto) and the poet Horace (65-8 BC) described the area as a place of 'eternal spring'. Unlike the other southern regions of Italy, there are hardly any mountains, but the landscape consists of plateaus and flatlands. The climate is hot and dry. The soils are mainly limestone, clay and sandstone.

Among the most famous red wine grape varieties of the Puglia region are Negroamaro, Primitivo, Nero di Troia and Bombino Nero. - Gerardo [TS07/22]

"The most and best wines are still produced in Salento, although it should be noted that the spicy, evolutionary reds based on Negroamaro are often more popular with foreign audiences than in Italy itself. For several years now, Primitivo has been making its mark on the Puglia wine scene. Especially in Manduria, on the Ionian coast near Taranto, and in Murgia, especially in Gioia del Colle, new Primitivo styles have emerged alongside the traditional ones. On the Adriatic side of Salento, too, highly interesting wines are currently being obtained from these grapes." - Slow Wine

Puglia is a region in the south of Italy known for its rich culture and beautiful landscape. However, the region is also known for its excellent wines, especially its red wines. Vineyards in Puglia benefit from the Mediterranean climate and good soil conditions, which provide ideal conditions for growing different grape varieties.

One of the most famous red wines from Puglia is Primitivo di Manduria. This wine is made from the Primitivo grape variety and is particularly known for its deep red hue and strong flavor. Primitivo di Manduria has a high alcohol strength and is rich in aromas of ripe fruits such as plums and cherries. Another well-known red wine from Puglia is Negroamaro. This wine is made from the grape variety of the same name and is known for its deep red color and strong structure. Negroamaro has good acidity and tannins and is rich in aromas of ripe fruit and spices.

Another highlight from Puglia is Salice Salentino, made from the Negroamaro and Malvasia Nera grape varieties. This wine is known for its fruity and easily accessible aromas and has good acidity and tannins. Salice Salentino is a perfect accompaniment to Mediterranean dishes such as pizza and pasta. Another well-known grape variety from Puglia is Uva di Troia. This wine has a deep red color and a strong taste reminiscent of blackberries and plums. Uva di Troia has a good tannin and acid structure and is perfect for long aging.

Overall, Puglia offers a wide range of red wines, known for both their quality and variety. These wines are perfect for any occasion and offer a wide choice for both beginners and connoisseurs. Although these wines are not as well known as other wines from other regions of Italy, they are definitely worth trying. - Gerardo [TS01/23]
