Blog: Puglia | Wine region

Puglia is the region located at the heel of the 'boot'. In terms of landscape, it has wide plains that slope gently towards the sea and some mountain ranges. The red earth, on which wine, grain, olive trees and fruit u. Vegetables grow, is a relic of the decay of the lime soils.

A strongly agriculturally oriented region with intensive durum wheat cultivation and corresponding pasta production. In viticulture, Puglia and Sicily vie year after year for the top position of the largest wine production in Italy. However, quantity by no means goes hand in hand with low quality. In recent years, Puglia's wineries have undergone a major transformation, new techniques have been introduced and more and more producers are moving towards bottling their own wines rather than selling them to bottlers. Characterful quality wines grow in this region, for example - to name just a few examples - around the Staufer castle of Frederick II Castel del Monte in the wine-growing area of the same name, in Salento or the province of Taranto, home to the grape variety Primitivo, which is said to be the original grape of Zinfandel. The most famous wines of the region, in addition to the reds, are certainly the fine rosés, a specialty of the region.

There are many views on the origin of the grape variety Primitivo, but there is no doubt with regard to its distribution: the native grape variety is grown on a total area of about 9,000 hectares, making it one of the ten most cultivated varieties in Italy. Even if in recent times there has been repeated talk of its relationship with the Zinfandel grape variety, one thing is certain: Primivito originates from Italy and has been widely grown there in the Puglia region since the early 18th century. The genetic similarity with other grape varieties - may this be coincidence or remnants of even older distribution paths - can not hide the fact that Primitivo in its current form is no longer indispensable in Italy's wine landscape. Many people compare it wistfully with Zinfandel, especially since Primitivo is far less well known abroad than its apparent cousin - reason enough to contribute something to the salvation of this misunderstood grape variety.

Apulia has a varied variety of vines. Without a doubt, the most famous are two red wines made from indigenous grape varieties: the Primitivo and the Negroamaro are known far beyond the region's borders. - Gerardo [TS10/23]

"Puglia is a complex, diverse region where viticulture is practiced practically everywhere. In the statistics of annual wine production, Puglia occupies second place in Italy, with a constant predominance of reds and rosés over whites. On the other hand, the white wine sector is currently in a significant growth phase from both a qualitative and quantitative point of view." - Slow Wine

"Within a few years, the autochthonous growths became the linchpin of the wine industry of the region, and moreover they are increasingly earning praise and recognition outside its borders. A plus is to be registered in addition in the stylistic range. The most important grapes, from Primitivo to Negroamaro and Nero di Troia, are now interpreted with such precision that their characteristics can be more clearly attributed to the specific terroir or varietal character." - Gambero Rosso
