Piedmont | Red Wine

Piedmont is a feast for the senses: legendary red wines and heavenly-smelling truffles, enchanting landscapes and charming little towns, ancient castles and beautiful palaces, high Alpine peaks and Mediterranean lakes, a feast for all the senses. The baroque capital Turin deserves special attention.

The area between the foothills of the Alps and the Apennines is undisputedly one of the world's great wine-growing regions. With a good 48,000 hectares of vineyards, Piedmont may not be the largest region in terms of volume, but it is the strongest in terms of quality. This is mainly due to the Nebbiolo variety, from which, for example, Barolo, Barbaresco and Roero wines are made. But Barbera and the white varieties Cortese di Gavi and Arneis, and to a lesser extent the dessert wine Moscato d'Asti, also contribute to the fame. Piedmontese wines have their own character, as many of the grape varieties grown there are either not grown in other parts of Italy or do not play a comparable role there in terms of quality. This is true of Nebbiolo, Grignolino, Dolcetto and others, and Barbera does not play the role in the rest of Italy that it does in Piedmont.

At the top of the Piedmont red wines are the remarkable Barolo and Barbaresco wines. Below them rank the other Nebbiolo wines, which are often excellent, starting with Nebbiolo d'Alba and ending with the wines of northern Piedmont. - Gerardo [TS07/22]
