Blog: Cantina Terlan · South Tyrol
One of the first cellar cooperatives in South Tyrol was founded in 1893 in the middle of the wine-growing region of Terlan. At that time, 24 winegrowers set themselves the goal of joint production and marketing. Today the Terlan Winery, with its 120 members, a cultivated area of 150 hectares and a total production of 1.4 million bottles, is one of the most important wineries in the country in terms of quality. The manageable production contributes significantly to quality assurance. Under the expert control of Enologist Rudi Kofler, 70% white and 30% red wines mature in the modern winery, all of which carry the DOC classification. Terlan wines have stored in them the peculiarities of climate and soil. In their careful aging, great importance is attached to the preservation and emphasis of the area type. The results are distinctive, very individual wines, characterized by fruit and breed, but also by captivating density and longevity.
Terlan's vineyards extend from the gentle hills on the valley floor to the steep mountain slopes with extreme vegetation conditions. Their orientation towards the south guarantees a strong sun exposure. Under almost Mediterranean conditions, a wide range of grape varieties thrives here and one encounters many a Mediterranean plant such as olives, pomegranates, cypresses or almond trees in Terlan. The specific soil characteristics and microclimatic conditions result in wines with a distinctive character typical of the area, which is consciously preserved and bottled at the Terlan Winery. - Gerardo [TS03/23]
"The meticulous classification of each winemaker's vineyard reflects this cooperative's intimate relationship with its growing region. The perfect interpretation of the diverse terroirs is the result of the stable and persistent success of these mineral, progressive wines that glide quietly through the years, as shown by the stocks of old bottles put aside since the time of Sebastian Stocker." - Gambero Rosso
