Tradition and History of the Pfannenstielhof
The South Tyrolean winery Pfannenstielhof, run by the Pfeifer family, is a true gem located in the municipality of Bolzano. The estate has been family-owned since the 18th century and is now managed with passion and dedication by the seventh generation. The Pfeifer family is committed to preserving and developing the long-standing tradition of viticulture in South Tyrol. Even at a time when winemaking in the region was still in its infancy, the Pfeifers focused on quality and sustainability. Today, they are known for their respectful approach to nature and the particularly gentle processing of grapes to create authentic South Tyrolean wines of the highest quality.
The Wines of Pfannenstielhof: Quality by Conviction
At Pfannenstielhof, a small but exquisite selection of wines is produced, reflecting the terroir and unique characteristics of the region. The main focus is on St. Magdalener, a classic red wine made from the indigenous Vernatsch grape variety. In addition to red wines, the winery also produces selected rosé wines, known for their freshness and elegance. The wines are characterized by their authenticity, distinctive character, and the meticulous manual work carried out in the vineyard.
St. Magdalener - The Classic from Bolzano
St. Magdalener is the flagship wine of Pfannenstielhof and a cornerstone of the region’s wine culture. This dry red wine impresses with intense aromas of red fruits and subtle spicy notes. On the palate, it is lively, fresh, and well-balanced in acidity. St. Magdalener pairs perfectly with traditional South Tyrolean specialties such as speck and cheese. The protected designation of origin ensures that St. Magdalener is produced exclusively in the Bolzano area and made according to traditional methods.
Vineyards and Terroir: The Heart of Pfannenstielhof
The vineyards of Pfannenstielhof cover around 10 hectares and are situated on sun-drenched slopes surrounding the estate. Their southern exposure and mineral-rich soils of limestone and slate provide ideal conditions for cultivating high-quality grapes. The grapes are harvested exclusively by hand and carefully selected to ensure that only the best fruit is used for winemaking.
Conclusion: Pfannenstielhof - Wine Culture with Personality
The Pfannenstielhof winery, run by the Pfeifer family, stands for a unique blend of tradition, quality, and innovation. With St. Magdalener, the estate has created a wine that is cherished not only in South Tyrol but also far beyond its borders. Johannes Pfeifer and his family are committed to the region’s traditional grape varieties and prove year after year that true craftsmanship and passion in winemaking can deliver outstanding results. - Gerardo [TS05/25]
"Johannes Pfeifer is a winemaker in the true sense of the word. Four hectares of land in the heart of the Lagrein growth zone he works and presses from the fruit real wine caliber of precisely defined style. At the end of the year, almost 40,000 bottles are produced, all of them excellently crafted reds, first and foremost the Sankt Magdalener, which the Pfannenstielhof has under control like no other. But also the Lagrein and as the latest creation the Blauburgunder are exceptionally typical and anything but banal drops.
The first Vernatsch/Schiava with three glasses is - if one disregards the Gschleier 90 from Girlan, which received the premium retroactively - the Sankt Magdalener/Santa Maddalena Classico of the Pfannenstielhof. No surprise really, after all this wine is regularly among the best, and the capable Johannes Pfeifer knew how to make brilliant use of the super vintage for the traditional Bolzano grape. Very typical its fruit bouquet wrapped in a coat of spices; firm, mineral and smooth taste with the familiar almond finish." - Gambero Rosso
