Blog: Pfannenstielhof | South Tyrol

The South Tyrolean winery Pfannenstielhof of the Peifer family is a historic winery located in the municipality of Bolzano. The winery has been known for many years for its excellent wines, especially the St. Magdalener.

History of the Pfannenstielhof of the Peifer family
The Pfannenstielhof winery was founded in the 18th century and has been family owned ever since. Over seven generations, the Pfeifer family has run the Pfannenstielhof, all the way back to a time when wine production in South Tyrol was still in its infancy. The Pfeifers are dedicated to preserving traditional winemaking practices and place special emphasis on the careful processing of grapes to produce South Tyrolean wines of the highest quality.

The wines of the Pfannenstielhof
The Pfannenstielhof winery produces a small but fine range of wines, including red, and rosé wines. However, the St. Magdalener, a light red wine, is the most famous and appreciated wine of the winery. St. Magdalener is made from the autochthonous grape Vernatsch and is an important part of the regional wine culture.

The St. Magdalener
The St. Magdalener of the Pfannenstielhof is a dry red wine with an intense aroma of red fruits and a hint of spice. The wine has a lively, fresh taste and a balanced acidity. St. Magdalener goes perfectly with the local dishes of the region, especially with bacon and cheese.

St. Magdalener is a protected name and may only be produced by wineries located in the region around Bolzano. Pfannenstielhof's St. Magdalener is made exclusively from grapes grown in the winery's vineyards. The grapes are harvested by hand and carefully selected to ensure that only the best grapes go into the winemaking process.

The Pfannenstielhof vineyards
The Pfannenstielhof vineyards are planted on the slopes surrounding the winery and cover a total of about 10 hectares. The vineyards face south and offer optimal conditions for growing grapes. The soils in the region are composed of limestone and slate and contribute to the high quality of the grapes.

Summary
The Pfannenstielhof winery owned by the Peifer family is a historic winery in South Tyrol known for its St. Magdalener. St. Magdalener is a dry red wine made from the autochthonous grape Vernatsch. Johannes Pfeifer places particular emphasis on the traditional grape varieties of South Tyrol and has long since achieved national and international fame with his wines. The various St. Magdalener from Pfeifer's production lead - without exaggeration - the best in all of South Tyrol. - Gerardo [TS03/23]

"Johannes Pfeifer is a winemaker in the true sense of the word. Four hectares of land in the heart of the Lagrein growth zone he works and presses from the fruit real wine caliber of precisely defined style. At the end of the year, almost 40,000 bottles are produced, all of them excellently crafted reds, first and foremost the Sankt Magdalener, which the Pfannenstielhof has under control like no other. But also the Lagrein and as the latest creation the Blauburgunder are exceptionally typical and anything but banal drops.

The first Vernatsch/Schiava with three glasses is - if one disregards the Gschleier 90 from Girlan, which received the premium retroactively - the Sankt Magdalener/Santa Maddalena Classico of the Pfannenstielhof. No surprise really, after all this wine is regularly among the best, and the capable Johannes Pfeifer knew how to make brilliant use of the super vintage for the traditional Bolzano grape. Very typical its fruit bouquet wrapped in a coat of spices; firm, mineral and smooth taste with the familiar almond finish." - Gambero Rosso
