Story: Argiolas | Sardinia
Page: 1/1
A hidden gem in the heart of Sardinia
At first glance, neither the sweltering summer heat nor the sleepy image of the small town of Serdiana would suggest that some of Italy's best wines are produced here. And yet it is precisely this inconspicuous place, just a few kilometers north of Cagliari, where the Argiolas winery has been setting standards for Sardinian quality wine for decades. The Argiolas family is considered a pioneer of modern viticulture in Sardinia and has made the island's wines famous far beyond the country's borders.
Franco and Giuseppe Argiolas, the grandsons of winery founder Antonio Argiolas, are now the third generation to run the family business. With over 200 hectares of vineyards that gently stretch across the hills of the Campidano di Serdiana region, they combine tradition with innovation. Their philosophy is based on a deep respect for Sardinian nature, combined with a consistent focus on quality in the vineyard and cellar.
State-of-the-art technology meets regional identity
Argiolas uses state-of-the-art winemaking technology: stainless steel tanks with temperature control, modern presses and targeted microvinification ensure that each grape variety and each parcel can be processed optimally. Native grape varieties such as Cannonau, Carignano, Malvasia Nera, Monica and the white Vermentino are cultivated with great care - because for the Argiolas, these varieties are not just traditional, but the heart of Sardinian wine identity.
In addition to technical precision, marketing is another of the company's strengths. While around half of the wines are consumed in Sardinia, around a third are sold to the rest of Italy. The remaining 20 percent is successfully exported to countries such as Germany, France, England, the USA and the Benelux countries. The brothers owe this not least to their clear vision and a professional sales policy established at an early stage. The fourth generation is already working alongside them - bringing a breath of fresh air to the traditional company.
Turriga - the flagship of Sardinia
The heart of the range and internationally renowned is the legendary Turriga - a great red wine that sets new standards with every vintage. Turriga is predominantly made from Cannonau, supplemented by smaller proportions of Carignano, Bovale Sardo and Malvasia Nera. 18 months in new French barriques give it depth, structure and a complex aroma spectrum of dark fruits, spices, Mediterranean herbs and a fine toasted note.
Turriga is a true ambassador of Sardinia and is regularly celebrated in rankings as one of the best wines in southern Italy. It is a wine for special occasions, with great ageing potential - powerful, elegant and yet unmistakably linked to its soil of origin.
Variety from Sardinia: red, white and sweet
But Argiolas is by no means just Turriga. The company's other wines also deserve attention. The Costera Cannonau di Sardegna offers an accessible, fruity interpretation of the grape variety and is a prime example of a modern, Mediterranean red wine. With the Perdera, the Monica di Sardegna grape variety shows its elegant, spicy potential.
The white wines, including the fresh, lively Costamolino made from Vermentino grapes or the aromatic Selegas made from the rare Nuragus grape, are in no way inferior to the red wines. The dessert wine Angialis, a seductively sweet composition of Nasco and Malvasia, is also particularly worthy of mention and pairs perfectly with blue cheese or fruity desserts.
A winery with a future
What makes Argiolas special is the harmonious interplay of craftsmanship, technology and sustainability. The vineyards are cultivated close to nature, water consumption is controlled and energy requirements are reduced. Preserving old grape varieties is also part of the philosophy of the winery, which is constantly committed to biodiversity and the preservation of Sardinian culture.
Today, the Argiolas winery not only stands for excellent Sardinian wines, but also for a new generation of producers who know their roots but are looking to the future with vision. If you want to taste Sardinia, these wines are a must. - Gerardo [TS04/25]
"Argiolas presents a kind of family winery as a model, but on a grand scale. The new generation at the helm is professional and passionate, and fortunate to have the use of an oenologist and technical director as humble as Mariano Murru." - Daniele Cernilli (Doctor Wine)
