History and development of the Camigliano winery
The Camigliano winery, located southwest of the Tuscan town of Montalcino, was acquired in 1957 by entrepreneur Walter Ghezzi. Under his leadership, the estate began to focus on the production of high-quality wines. Particularly noteworthy is the first Brunello harvest in 1965, which represents a significant milestone in the history of the winery. In the late 1980s, his son Gualtiero took over and initiated comprehensive modernization measures that made the winery one of the leading businesses in the region.
Modernization and expansion of the winery
A key element of the modernization was the construction of a new underground winery that blends harmoniously into the landscape and enables environmentally friendly winemaking. By taking advantage of the natural slope, a cascade-like structure was created that minimizes the use of pumps and preserves the sensory properties of the wine. The winery is equipped with state-of-the-art technology and offers ideal conditions for the maturation of the wines.
Vineyards and cultivation methods
The Camigliano vineyards cover around 100 hectares and are located at an altitude of between 250 and 270 meters above sea level. The soils vary from sandy loam to clayey soils to calcareous marls with fossils. Since 2017, the vineyards have been cultivated according to organic guidelines, with mechanical tillage and manual interventions replacing the use of herbicides. The grapes are carefully selected both in the vineyard and in the cellar to ensure the best possible quality.
Wine production and range
Camigliano produces around 330,000 bottles of wine annually, including renowned wines such as Brunello di Montalcino, Rosso di Montalcino, Poderuccio IGT, and Gamal Vermentino IGT. The wines are characterized by their elegance and complexity, which are enhanced by the targeted use of French oak barrels and cement tanks during maturation. In addition to wine, the winery also produces high-quality DOP Terre di Siena olive oil and grappa from the Brunello vineyards.
Hospitality and sustainability
Camigliano attaches great importance to sustainability and organic farming, which is reflected in the quality and purity of its products. The winery offers visitors the opportunity to tour the vineyards and cellars and participate in tastings. By renovating historic buildings in the village of Camigliano, the winery creates an authentic setting for wine lovers while contributing to the preservation of the region's cultural heritage. - Gerardo [TS10/25]
"Camigliano was acquired in 1957 by Walter Ghezzi, an entrepreneur very fond of agriculture, and converted to the production of quality wines, especially Brunello di Montalcino. His son Gualtiero and his family have worked hard to modernize the farm and enhance the area. In 2014 the winery also began to produce wines with organic methods, the herbicides have since been completely replaced by mechanical tillage between the rows and also by manual intervention in the younger vineyards." - Falstaff
