The origin of a legend
The Lafóa line from the Schreckbichl winery has become a trademark for exclusive top wines from South Tyrol. But the story of this special wine line begins in the 1980s, when Luis Raifer, then managing director and driving force behind the winery, had a vision: South Tyrol's potential for quality wines should become visible worldwide.

After an inspiring study trip to California, Raifer brought back new ideas and methods that laid the foundations for the Lafóa line. The starting point was a sun-drenched mountain ridge called Lafóa, directly behind the Schreckbichl winery. Here, Raifer replaced the traditional Vernatsch vines with international varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc. The decision to use these varieties was not only innovative, but also courageous, as they set new standards for quality and terroir expression.

New standards in viticulture
The introduction of the Lafóa line also marked the beginning of a revolution in viticulture at the Schreckbichl winery. Yield reduction became the top priority: fewer grapes per vine meant more concentrated aromas and higher quality. In addition, Raifer optimized the care of the vines and vinification in order to get the best out of the unique terroir of the South Tyrolean vineyards.
