Cirò | Classic

The Cirò Classico from Calabria has been one of the most famous wines of southern Italy for decades. The fruity red and rosé wines from the Gaglioppo grape and the fresh white wine from the Greco grape variety are very popular. Not only the Librandi winery, but also several smaller wineries have been producing high-quality versions of Cirò for years, including some naturally produced products. Cirò is also available as a Riserva, where longer aging in barrel and bottle further refines the product.

Cirò is produced as white, red and rosé wine, it is the most popular wine of Calabria. According to legend, in ancient times, the red wine was served to the winners of the Olympics. More than 40 years ago, it was one of the first to receive the DOC predicate.  Persistently fresh on the nose with subtle hints of citrus fruit, accented by floral notes. The palate is refreshing and uncomplicated with a beautiful fruity component. The finish also lives on the fragrant fruit, combined with a light mineral note. - Gerardo [TS02/24]

'DOC for dry red, rose and white wines in the Italian region of Calabria. The zone includes the namesake municipalities of Cirò and Cirò Marina (the Classico area), as well as Crucoli and Melissa in the province of Catanzaro. The core area looks back to a very long past and was identified as the Greek Krimisa (Cremissa), which was later baptized Zrò and finally Cirò. According to legend, a red wine from here was served to Olympic winners in ancient times. Moreover, it was allegedly carried by athletes during training in amphorae from the ball to the toe of the Italian boot. It was considered (and this is still the case today) particularly rich in body and alcohol." - wein-plus.de

The most famous producer, Librandi Winery, is located in Cirò Marina, a sunny town on the Calabrian-Ionian coast, near Punta Alice, the southern bay of the Gulf of Taranto. This area, with its clayey soils and its favorable geographical position, not far from the sea, at the foot of the Sila mountains and therefore exposed to an ideal change of temperature between day and night, brings with it a natural inclination for wine growing. Librandi has been engaged in viticulture for four generations. However, bottling under its own name dates back to the fifties, thanks to Antonio Cataldo. Librandi has remained faithful to the traditional flavors of Calabria - to this day, the local grape variety Gaglioppo is preferred for the wines. - Gerardo [TS04/23]
