Durello | Grape variety
The Durello grape variety, also known as Durella, is a real insider tip from northern Italy, which is particularly at home in the Veneto and Lombardy regions. Although it has been cultivated for centuries, it is hardly known outside Italy - yet it has great potential, especially for the production of high-quality sparkling wines. The grape thrives in the Monti Lessini area on volcanic soils, which give the wine a distinctive minerality and freshness. The cool, alpine climate and the special geological conditions ensure that the grapes ripen slowly and promote the development of a lively acidity. These characteristics make Durello wines not only particularly expressive, but also surprisingly long-lasting.
The strength of Durello comes into its own when used as the basis for sparkling wines made using the traditional bottle fermentation method. The natural acidity provides a stable backbone that gains structure and depth through maturation on the lees. The result is elegant, dry sparkling wines with a fine perlage and aromas of citrus fruit, green apple and subtle mineral notes. Despite these qualities, the grape variety remains rare and is only cultivated on a limited area, which makes it even more attractive to explorers and connoisseurs. Durello exemplifies the diversity of Italy's indigenous grape varieties and is impressive proof that true treasures are hidden away from the big names - authentic, terroir-driven and full of character. - Gerardo [TS05/25]
