Nieddera | Grape variety

The Nieddera is an outstanding Italian grape variety, found mainly on the beautiful island of Sardinia. Its origins go back a long way and it is closely linked to the rich history and culture of this region. The namesake giants are a reference to the giants of Mont'e Prama, formerly freestanding sandstone cult statues of the Sardinian nuragic culture. In 1974, the farmer Sisinnio Poddi plowed out the head of one of these statues on the Sinis Peninsula. The forty years of excavation campaigns brought to light other statues, nuraghe models and wall remains. The age of the giants of Mont'e Prama indicates that the oldest free-standing large sculpture in Europe was created in Sardinia, even before a similar development began in Greece.
