Refosco is an autochthonous grape variety of Italy, grown mainly in Friuli as well as Istria. Among the different varieties, Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso is the best known and most valuable. In Friuli Venezia Giulia, the grape variety sometimes produces very high quality, powerful and tannic red wines, although the grapes are sometimes used for mid-range wines. However, there are some notable exceptions, particularly in the Collio region, where some of the best Refosco wines are produced.
In the Collio area, low yields per hectare are aimed at maximizing the quality of the grapes. Winemakers rely on careful acid reduction and moderate aging in oak barrels to produce top-quality wines.
