Story: Badia a Coltibuono | Toskana
Page: 1/1
The thousand-year-old Vallombrosan Abbey of Coltibuono is a place where history, culture and nature merge harmoniously. Its origins date back to the Etruscans, and since 1846 it has belonged to the ancestors of the Tuscan banking family Stucchi Prinetti. This family's multifaceted history combines roots from Switzerland, Naples, Tuscany and Milan.
The extensive estate now covers around 800 hectares, even after the sale of large areas. It is divided into two areas: the historic abbey complex and a wooded area in Monti, around 15 kilometers away. Wine has been bottled here under its own label since the 1950s - a heritage that is preserved in the abbey's tasting room with bottles from this period.
Excellent wines and organic farming
Since the 1980s, the product range of Badia a Coltibuono has steadily expanded. In addition to classic Chianti wines, a pure Sangiovese wine, known as Sangioveto, is also matured here in oak barrels. Today, around 800,000 bottles are produced annually, using grapes from the estate's own vineyards as well as from long-standing partners.
The winery is managed by Roberto Stucchi Prinetti, an oenologist trained in California, and his sister Emanuela. Together they have modernized the winery and revitalized it with new impulses, without losing sight of the deeply rooted traditions.
Experiences in the heart of Chianti
The Stucchi Prinetti family cultivates the land with respect for nature and specializes in the production of organic wines and olive oils. But Badia a Coltibuono is more than just a winery - it is a cultural attraction and a place of relaxation.

"Badia a Coltibuono is one of the most historic and important of the Chianti estates... The Badia Chiantis remain among the most expansive and richest of all the Chiantis. From recent vintages one can see that some wonderfully rich, ripe wines are being made here with cellaring potential of 5-10 years." - Robert Parker
