Welcome to Fattoria di Poggio Capponi
In this article we would like to give you an insight into the idyllic Poggio Capponi winery in picturesque Tuscany. Poggio Capponi is all about first-class Chianti, cinematic landscapes and a rich history that makes every visit an unforgettable experience. The Fattoria Poggio Capponi is a place of rare beauty, where wine, olive oil and wheat, all typical products of the Montespertoli area, are produced.
The history
In the 1930s, Giuseppe Rousseau Colzi, a Florentine industrialist who was impressed by the splendid gentleness of these hills and the beauty of the surrounding landscape, decided to buy the estate. In those years, the Fattoria was an ideal place to spend vacations and relaxing days with family and friends, characterized by large hunting parties and festive moments, without forgetting the agricultural activities in this area surrounded by a suggestive rural landscape.
After the Second World War, the farm was continued by the Rousseau Colzi family. Giuseppe was succeeded by his son Giovanni, who in turn, together with his son Michelangelo, gave new impetus to agriculture.
These were years of major investment in the modernization of structures and production. At the same time, agritourism was launched, which is still run today by Giovanni's daughter Gioconda Rousseau Colzi. This activity allows many visitors to stay in these beautiful places surrounded by the green valleys and rolling hills of Montespertoli.
Today, in the fourth generation, the Rousseau Colzi family continues the activities of Fattoria Poggio Capponi with dedication, from wine and oil production to agritourism, offering an enchanting place to taste the products of this land of Chianti and lose yourself in the green of the hills and vineyards.
Indiana Jones backdrop
Precious and fascinating landscapes also for the cinema; in fact, in the Fattoria Poggio Capponi countryside many scenes of the film 'La notte di San Lorenzo' by directors Paolo and Vittorio Taviani were filmed in 1982, and in 1994 some scenes of 'the young Indiana Jones' from the saga conceived by George Lucas were shot.
The wines
At Poggio Capponi, Chianti is produced in various qualities and stages of maturation. The Chianti differs greatly from the famous Chianti Classico in some aspects: this red wine has significantly less astringency due to the softer tannins and more flattering berry fruit. These are quaffable wines that are ready to drink much earlier than their 'big brother', the Chianti Classico.
Chianti Poggio Capponi
Our bestseller and the house's calling card is the simple Chianti: a dry yet mild palate-pleaser with the typical fruity notes reminiscent of small red and black berries. What's more, the price is well under 10 euros, making the wine absolutely suitable for everyday drinking.
Chianti Riserva
The Chianti Riserva is a jewel among Tuscan wines. Made from carefully selected Sangiovese grapes that ripen on the sun-drenched slopes of our vineyards, this wine offers a harmonious bouquet of red fruits and spices. With its elegant finish and impressive structure, the Chianti Riserva from Poggio Capponi is a tribute to the tradition and craftsmanship of Tuscany.
Petriccio & Tinorso
With the two premium wines Petriccio and Tinorso, Poggio Capponi has ventured into a Chianti Riserva from a single vineyard and a Super Tuscan made from Merlot and Syrah grapes. Both are considerably more complex than the entry-level wines and therefore have more depth, without lacking the typical drinkability and Tuscan mellowness that characterize Poggio Capponi wines. - Gerardo [TS02/24]
