Tenuta Sant'Antonio: A masterpiece from the Veneto region
In the north-east of Italy, nestled between the picturesque hills of the Val d'Illasi, lies the Tenuta Sant'Antonio winery. This region is known for its impressive wines and its wine-growing history, which dates back to ancient times. The Castagnedi brothers, who have run the winery since its foundation, have made a name for themselves in the wine world with their exceptional quality and innovative approach. The winery is particularly well known for its Valpolicella wines, the fine Amarone and the modern Scaia line, which sets new standards.
The location: a paradise for vines
Tenuta Sant'Antonio covers around 48 hectares and is located in one of the best wine-growing regions in Italy. It is located near the famous DOC regions of Valpolicella and Soave, which are known worldwide for their excellent wines. The vineyards of the winery are situated at an altitude of 120 to 320 meters above sea level, which allows the grapes to ripen ideally. The soils are highly calcareous and lean, which helps the vines to become deeply rooted in the soil and develop complex aromas.
Tradition meets innovation: the development of the winery
In the 1980s, the Castagnedi brothers began to expand the winery with a clear vision for the future. They doubled the original cultivation area through acquisitions and opted for modern cultivation methods. Old vineyards were replanted with higher vine density and lower yields. This led to higher quality grapes and better control over wine production.
A decisive step in the history of the winery was the switch from the traditional “Pergola Veronese” to the modern training systems of spurred cordon and Guyot. This radical change enabled the brothers to further improve the quality of the grapes and make the wines even more precise. They soon decided to no longer just sell grapes, but to take the entire production into their own hands and vinify high-quality wines under their own label.
The wines of Tenuta Sant'Antonio: a reflection of the region
Tenuta Sant'Antonio's wine production reflects the diversity and potential of the region. The winery relies on the classic grape varieties of the Veneto, such as Corvina, Corvinone, Rondinella and Cabernet for the red wines and Garganega and Chardonnay for the white wines. These grape varieties, which thrive ideally on the calcareous soil of the region, form the basis for the outstanding wines produced by Tenuta Sant'Antonio.
Amarone and Valpolicella: the pride of the winery
Tenuta Sant'Antonio is particularly well known for its wines from the Valpolicella region, especially the Amarone della Valpolicella. This fine wine is made from dried grapes and is characterized by its intensity and complexity. The Amarone from Sant'Antonio is a true masterpiece that embodies the tradition of the region in a modern guise. The dry and cold wind blowing from Lake Garda gives the grapes a natural concentration of aromas and sugar, which gives Amarone its unmistakable depth.
Valpolicella, a lighter, fresher wine compared to Amarone, is an excellent alternative. It also reflects the terroir and the passion of the Castagnedi brothers and is a prime example of the high art of viticulture in the Veneto.
Scaia: the modern line of the winery
In addition to the traditional wines from the Valpolicella region, Tenuta Sant'Antonio has created a modern range of wines, the Scaia line, which is particularly appreciated for its freshness and aromas. The Scaia wines, which are matured exclusively in stainless steel tanks, offer a lighter, more accessible alternative to the classic Valpolicella wines. The line began with three wines that impress with their freshness and complexity. The aromatic clarity of the Scaia wines, which is achieved by not using wooden barrels, is particularly noteworthy.
Over time, Tenuta Sant'Antonio has further expanded the Scaia line and introduced two additional wines produced with a small proportion of dried grapes. These wines offer additional complexity but retain the freshness and drinkability that characterize the Scaia line.
Tradition and innovation in perfection
Tenuta Sant'Antonio has established itself as one of the leading wineries in the Veneto region, masterfully combining tradition and innovation. With wines that reflect both the authenticity of the region and the modern art of winemaking, the winery has not only won the hearts of wine lovers, but has also gained international recognition. Whether through the powerful and elegant Amarone wines, the classic Valpolicella wines or the fresh, modern Scaia wines - Tenuta Sant'Antonio offers the right experience for every wine lover. Thanks to the passion of the Castagnedi brothers and their tireless work in the vineyard and cellar, Tenuta Sant'Antonio remains a true jewel of the Veneto. - Gerardo [TS12/24]
