The history of the Cantina Sociale di Oliena dates back to 1950, when a handful of local winegrowers joined forces to pool their know-how around the Cannonau grape variety and improve production quality. The outstanding subzone of Cannonau di Sardegna DOC is located in Oliena, near Nuoro and is called Nepente di Oliena. Where Cantina Oliena carries out its wine production, the most famous Cannonau of Sardinia thrives in the traditional style: Cannonau Nepente di Oliena.
Classic Cannonau Nepente is a dry red wine of great structure and body. It is made from 100% Cannonau di Sardegna grapes. The wine comes from selected and particularly sunny sites in the hills of the municipality of Oliena. The grape variety finds here, thanks to the poor soil and the dry climate - ideal growing conditions. Cantina Oliena combines traditional methods with the modern technologies of winemaking and sells the wines produced in this way on a regional, national and international basis. - Gerardo [TS03/23]

The winery was founded in 1950 by a group of winemakers of Oliena to improve the wine Cannonau. The culture of work and to be together has dominated the decision to create the cellar in the form of cooperatives, so as to give impetus to the business, but with deep social impact and above all to carry the corporate philosophy based on quality and not on profit, thus distinguishing the Cantina since its inception. The winery combines ancient methods handed down over time, the most advanced technologies of production.
The origins of the Cannonau grape variety are not clearly established to this day. Until recently it was believed that this was introduced to the island in the fifteenth century during the settlement of the Spanish. However, the discovery of grape seeds dating back to 3200 in some sites off nuragici have shown that the ancient art of making wine was present on the island long before the settlement of the Spaniards. The results of genetic studies on the grape seeds, have proven the native origin of Cannonau and its historical cultivation on the island.
Cannonau is a variety that adapts to the different climatic conditions of the various wine regions in Sardinia. Despite its ubiquity in the island, the cultivation area is mainly concentrated in the central-eastern area, where all the notable and large vineyards are located. The grapes grow in strong clusters of average size which, when ripe, appear with black color and violet reflections. The vine has an average ripening period and can be harvested only between the third week of September and the first week of October. - Gerardo [TS03/23]
