The Cantina Sociale di Oliena, founded in 1950, is one of the best-known wine producers in Sardinia. It was founded by a small group of local winegrowers who set themselves the goal of pooling their knowledge of the Cannonau grape variety and sustainably improving the quality of their wines. The focus is on the outstanding sub-zone of Cannonau di Sardegna DOC, known as Nepente di Oliena. This region around the municipality of Oliena, near the town of Nuoro, is considered to be the origin of Sardinia's most famous Cannonau.
Cannonau Nepente di Oliena is a traditional red wine that delights with its impressive structure and richness. Made from 100% Cannonau di Sardegna grapes, this wine represents the best that this noble grape variety has to offer. The grapes grow in carefully selected, particularly sun-drenched hillside vineyards around Oliena. The poor soils and dry, Mediterranean climate provide ideal conditions for the vines and produce grapes of exceptional quality.

The winery was founded in 1950 by a group of winemakers of Oliena to improve the wine Cannonau. The culture of work and to be together has dominated the decision to create the cellar in the form of cooperatives, so as to give impetus to the business, but with deep social impact and above all to carry the corporate philosophy based on quality and not on profit, thus distinguishing the Cantina since its inception. The winery combines ancient methods handed down over time, the most advanced technologies of production.
The origins of the Cannonau grape variety are not clearly established to this day. Until recently it was believed that this was introduced to the island in the fifteenth century during the settlement of the Spanish. However, the discovery of grape seeds dating back to 3200 in some sites off nuragici have shown that the ancient art of making wine was present on the island long before the settlement of the Spaniards. The results of genetic studies on the grape seeds, have proven the native origin of Cannonau and its historical cultivation on the island.
Cannonau is a variety that adapts to the different climatic conditions of the various wine regions in Sardinia. Despite its ubiquity in the island, the cultivation area is mainly concentrated in the central-eastern area, where all the notable and large vineyards are located. The grapes grow in strong clusters of average size which, when ripe, appear with black color and violet reflections. The vine has an average ripening period and can be harvested only between the third week of September and the first week of October. - Gerardo [TS03/23]
