Sardegna | Wine region

Sardinia is the second largest island in the Mediterranean Sea and Italy. Due to its geographical position and cultural background, it is very different from the Italian mainland. From the Sardinian culture of the Bronze Age, for example, have been preserved until today the 'nuraghi', whose meaning is still not deciphered. Like Corsica, the island existed in the Mediterranean before the formation of the Apennine Alps. The valleys of the rivers Tirso, Flumendos and Oliena border the massif of Gennargentu in the center of the island, which is the highest, wildest and most impressive of Sardinia. The present economy of the island is based on tourism and agriculture. Important crops are olives, vegetables and wine, although the area under cultivation has greatly decreased due to deforestation. Other important crops are artichokes, almonds, tropical fruits, tobacco. Cork is produced in large quantities by the cork oaks of Gallura. Also from Gallura comes the only DOCG wine of the island, Vermentino di Gallura. The trend in recent years towards light, fresh and delicate white wines has given a new boost to the island's Vermentino wines, which are considered ideal summer wines. Sardinia's most famous red grape is undoubtedly Cannonau, just as Moncia and Girò are actually of Spanish origin and were brought to Sardinia sometime between the 15th and 18th centuries. - Gerardo [TS01/23]

"Scenically, Sardinia is certainly the most diverse and biodiverse region of Italy. Our cellar visits often turn out to be like a tour through an adventure park, at times also like an adventure trip due to the road conditions. Not infrequently, the estates are located in places of wild beauty, but sometimes not easy to track down." - Slow Wine

Funtanaliras Oro · Vermentino di Gallura DOCG 2022

Cantina del Vermentino, Sardegna

Straightforward and balanced Vermentino di Gallura, straw yellow color with a subtle greenish tinge. The bouquet of Funtanalira is elegant and floral, with hints of citrus and tropical fruit. The palate is fresh and soft, with a pleasant acidity, good structure and some minerality. - Gerardo [TS02/23]

"The two Vermentino di Gallura, of course, immediately stood out from the rest of the bottle group. On the one hand, there is the citrusy and herbaceous Funtanaliras, with its fresh, agile taste that finishes spicy. Not leaving his side is the lively, quaffable S'Eleme, which in its bouquet takes off on abundant bright fruit." - Gambero Rosso

´Senes´ · Cannonau di Sardegna Riserva DOC 2017, Argiolas, Sardinien
Senes · Cannonau di Sardegna Riserva DOC 2017

Argiolas, Sardegna

Senes plays with the concept of time, once as a tribute to the company's founder Antonio Argiolas, who planted the first vineyards almost 100 years ago, and secondly with the aging time to this sparkling, almost impenetrable, ruby red Riserva. Dark berry aromas, sweet spices and a subtle smoky tone paired with ripe tannins and a melting texture. - Gerardo [TS03/18]

"Brilliant ruby red. The nose is austere, with clear spicy notes of orange peel. The palate is full-bodied, spicy and elegant. The tannins are juicy and ripe and the progression is long and extended." - Daniele Cernilli (Doctor Wine)
"Dark ruby red. Subtle wood spice opens the nose, then rich cherry fruit, plums, forest floor, also has slightly chalky nuances, reverberating with fruit tea. Warm-hearted, ripe cranberry fruit on the palate, stretches compact and pithy across the tongue, grippy, juicy tannin, well-integrated wood, stretches a round arch into the finish." - Falstaff

´Arbóre´ · Cannonau di Sardegna Classico DOC 2014, Gabbas, Sardinien
Arbóre · Cannonau di Sardegna Classico DOC 2014

Gabbas, Sardegna

This Cannonau Classico clearly bears the signature of Giuseppe Gabbas: the extremely selected grapes come from vines over 40 years old. A small proportion of the ancient Sardinian grape variety Muristellu gives the wine an aromatic profile and emphasizes the typical Cannonau characteristics. The spectrum of aromas ranges from blackberries to wild hedgerow roses and subtle toasty aromas. The wine is full-bodied without being opulent and of optimal concentration. - Gerardo [TS06/15]

"Dark ruby red. The aromas are austere of citrus, ink and Mediterranean scrub. The palate is coherent, with almost earthy notes, of humus, strong but elegant tannins and a clear progression." - Daniele Cernilli (Doctor Wine)

Viticulture in Sardinia has a long history and is closely linked to the culture and tradition of the island. The wine growing areas in Sardinia are mainly found in the south of the island, especially in the regions of Campidano di Cagliari, Ogliastra and Sarcidano.

The main grape varieties grown in Sardinia are Cannonau, Monica, Carignano and Bovale. Cannonau is the most widespread grape variety in Sardinia and is mainly grown in the Ogliastra region. It is mainly used for the production of red wine and has a deep red color and a strong, spicy flavor. Monica is another important grape variety grown mainly in the Sarcidano region and is used mainly for the production of red wine. Carignano is mainly grown in the Campidano di Cagliari region and is mainly used for the production of red wine.

In recent years, viticulture in Sardinia has undergone significant changes. Wine growers have invested in modern technologies and cultivation methods to improve the quality of their wines. There are also a growing number of wineries that have converted to organic farming and rely on natural methods to care for their vines. Sardinian viticulture has also won many awards and prizes, proving that the wines from Sardinia can compete with the best wines from Europe and the world. Sardinia is also known for its annual wine festivals, where tourists have the opportunity to taste the different types of wine and learn more about viticulture on the island. There are also many wineries that welcome visitors and offer guided tours of the growing areas.

Overall, viticulture in Sardinia is an important part of the island's culture and economy and offers tourists the opportunity to discover and enjoy unique and high quality wines. - Gerardo [TS01/23]
