Sardegna | Wine region
Sardinia is the second largest island in the Mediterranean Sea and Italy. Due to its geographical position and cultural background, it is very different from the Italian mainland. From the Sardinian culture of the Bronze Age, for example, have been preserved until today the 'nuraghi', whose meaning is still not deciphered. Like Corsica, the island existed in the Mediterranean before the formation of the Apennine Alps. The valleys of the rivers Tirso, Flumendos and Oliena border the massif of Gennargentu in the center of the island, which is the highest, wildest and most impressive of Sardinia. The present economy of the island is based on tourism and agriculture. Important crops are olives, vegetables and wine, although the area under cultivation has greatly decreased due to deforestation. Other important crops are artichokes, almonds, tropical fruits, tobacco. Cork is produced in large quantities by the cork oaks of Gallura. Also from Gallura comes the only DOCG wine of the island, Vermentino di Gallura. The trend in recent years towards light, fresh and delicate white wines has given a new boost to the island's Vermentino wines, which are considered ideal summer wines. Sardinia's most famous red grape is undoubtedly Cannonau, just as Moncia and Girò are actually of Spanish origin and were brought to Sardinia sometime between the 15th and 18th centuries. - Gerardo [TS01/23]
"Scenically, Sardinia is certainly the most diverse and biodiverse region of Italy. Our cellar visits often turn out to be like a tour through an adventure park, at times also like an adventure trip due to the road conditions. Not infrequently, the estates are located in places of wild beauty, but sometimes not easy to track down." - Slow Wine
