Compared to the history of Italian viticulture and the success stories of many traditional companies, the career of Ornellaia is comparatively short: In 1981, Marchese Lodovico Antinori founded the winery in Bolgheri, a then new wine-growing region on the coast. At that time, no indigenous grape varieties were planted, but only international varieties such as Cabernet-Sauvignon, Cabernet-Franc and Merlot. The goal was to compete with the wines from Bordeaux, only later a little Sangiovese was added.
Lodovico Antinori, even then, attached great importance to independence and was not easy to deal with. The arguable character did not see in Ornellaia a strategic investment aligned with the plans of the great Antinori trading house. Instead, he was deeply impressed by the success of his friend Mario Incisa della Rocchetta, a touched horse breeder and conservationist - because the Bolgheri area was declared the first WWF protected area in Italy due to his initiative in 1959 - Mario Incisa della Rocchetta is also the founder of Tenuta San Guido (Sassicaia).
Lodovico Antonori dared to do something similar and turned Tenuta di Ornellaia into an exemplary, modern winery. The two flagships Ornellaia (Cabernet) and Masseto (Merlot) are among the great red wines of the world, there is no doubt among wine drinkers and connoisseurs.
Today the winery is owned by the Frescobaldi family, after the ownership took a detour through the Californian great winemaker Robert Mondavi. Certainly, with the change of ownership, the face of Tenuta dell Ornellaia has also changed, but the team at the winery is highly qualified and highly motivated, no development plan will fail. - Gerardo [TS06/22]
