Blog: Castellare di Castellina | Tuscany

The Castellare di Castellina winery, with its 80 hectares, is located in the heart of the Chianti Classico area, near the village of Castellina in Chianti. The almost 30 hectares of vineyards are located on high quality soils, with a southeastern exposure at an altitude of about 350-370m above sea level, forming a kind of natural amphitheater. In addition to the vineyard area itself, Castellare di Castellina also has about 12 hectares of olive groves and nearly 15 hectares planted with mixed crops. The roots of the winery date back to 1845, but Castellare di Castellina as we know it today is the result of a merger of five smaller wineries in 1968. The excellent terroir, consisting of the high quality and drainage soils, the calcareous marl and clay, as well as the good location, produce special wines. The Chianti Classico of this farm is known for good structure and are suitable for particularly long aging in the bottle. - Gerardo [TS06/22]

"When publisher Paolo Panerai set out to buy a wine estate in the late 1970s he had the great foresight and intuition to purchase Castellare di Castellina. He selected a property with a proven track record and enormous untapped potential. Over the decades and under his steady leadership, Castellare earned an unquestionable reputation for consistency and excellence. Winemaker Alessandro Cellai, with the estate since 1997, plays a pivotal role in guaranteeing that status. Castellare di Castellina is one of the great estates of Tuscany." - Robert Parker

"Like a kind of natural amphitheater, the magnificent estate of publisher Paolo Panerai presents itself to the viewer. We are in the municipality of Castellina, in the heart of Chianti Classico, where the vines grow at an average altitude of over 350 meters in a mixture of calcareous marl and lettos with a small percentage of clay, benefiting from a southeastern exposure. With Alessandro Cellai, the owner of the estate has hired an experienced expert, under whose direction everything is going well in the vineyard as well as in the cellar, which also houses the barrique storage." - Gambero Rosso
