Castellare di Castellina Castellare di Castellina

Castellare di Castellina | Tuscany

The Castellare di Castellina winery, with its 80 hectares, is located in the heart of the Chianti Classico area, near the village of Castellina in Chianti. The almost 30 hectares of vineyards are located on high quality soils, with a southeastern exposure at an altitude of about 350-370 metres above sea level, forming a kind of natural amphitheater. The excellent terroir, consisting of the high quality and drainage soils, the calcareous marl and clay, as well as the good location, result in special wines. The Chianti Classico of Castellare di Castellina is known for good structure and is suitable for particularly long aging in bottle. - Gerardo [TS06/22]

"It was the first and most prestigious winery in the estate portfolio of the Italian star journalist Paolo Panerai. 24 hectares of vineyards in the upper areas of the municipality are available to Castellare di Castellina in the historic heart of Chianti, which is also considered home to the most elegant and long-lasting Sangiovese labels in the zone." - Gambero Rosso

"Chianti Classico della Castellare has all the noble characteristics of Castellina wines, including an easy and convincing drinkability that fascinates from the first sip. The same goes for the Sodi di San Niccolò, red wine made from Sangiovese and Malvasia Nera, aged for aging in small barrels." - Daniele Cernilli (Doctor Wine)

Governo di Castellare IGT 2020, Castellare di Castellina, Toskana

Governo di Castellare IGT 2020

Castellare di Castellina, Tuscany

Lively red wine of medium ruby color. Fine bouquet of flowers and ripe red fruits. On the palate soft, fresh and of pleasant drinking flow. Traditionally, the Governo is served chilled.

This typical Tuscan specialty is made from Sangiovese, Malvasia Nera and Canaiolo grapes. The name Governo stands for a traditional method of production: after the first fermentation, dried grapes are added to the wine to trigger a second fermentation. This process makes Governo di Castellare not entirely dissimilar to a Ripasso. - Gerardo [TS11/21]

´Coniale´ · Cabernet Sauvignon IGT 2016, Castellare di Castellina, Toskana
Coniale · Cabernet Sauvignon IGT 2016

Castellare di Castellina, Tuscany

Since the 70s in Tuscany is also extremely successful Cabernet cultivation. Coniale is such a pure Cabernet Sauvignon which was aged for several months in barrique barrels. Full of aromas of elderberry and blackberry. Dense and juicy on the palate, followed by a nice cherry note and spicy finish.

Owner Paolo Panerai follows the ideal of traditional Chianti; international grape varieties such as Merlot and Cabernet are not to be found there. But Panerai is also open to noble vines from around the world. The Coniale shows what potent results an international grape variety can produce in the Chianti Classico area. - Gerardo [TS06/17]

"Blueberry, walnut, dark-chocolate and licorice aromas. Full body, chewy tannins and bright acidity." - James Suckling

"A deep, explosive wine, the Coniale (Cabernet Sauvignon) hits the palate with fabulous intensity and richness. Saddle leather, smoke, sage, rosemary and tobacco burst from the glass in a structured, imposing Cabernet Sauvignon loaded with class and personality. An exotic melange of black fruit, smoke, savory herbs, leather and tobacco resonate on the finish. There is so much to like in the 2010, a wine of true pedigree." - Antonio Galloni

"Rich, intense garnet. Hearty nose of ripe elderberries, blackcurrants and blackberries, noble spice. Dense and compact on the palate, spreads nicely, velvety, tightly woven tannin, fresh drink, punchy finish." - Falstaff

´Poggio ai Merli´ · Merlot IGT 2018, Castellare di Castellina, Toskana
Poggio ai Merli · Merlot IGT 2018

Castellare di Castellina, Tuscany

The pure Merlot Poggio ai Merli impressively represents the grape variety and the Tuscan terroir. The bouquet is characterized by aromas of plums, Amarena cherries and rhubarb, followed by notes of tobacco and licorice. Immensely juicy on the palate, persistent in the aftertaste. True to style and terroir.

Owner Paolo Panerai follows the ideal of traditional Chianti; international grape varieties such as Merlot and Cabernet are not found there. But Panerai is also open to noble vines from around the world. Poggio ai Merli shows what potent results an international grape variety can produce in the Chianti Classico area. - Gerardo [TS06/19]

"Very well constructed, with chewy tannins and lots of fruit. Chewy. Full body, with plenty going on and a long finish." - James Suckling

"The Poggio Ai Merli is a pure expression of Merlot that opens to a huge sense of opulence and roundness, as only the best Merlots can do. This is a seamless expression that is beaming with cherry and blackberry backed by soft spice, tobacco and leather. I loved the textural richness and the way it so softly caresses the palate. If you are a fan of Merlot, this is one of the best from Italy. It's set for either near-term or long-term consumption. - Robert Parker

"Intense, rich garnet. In the nose of delicate aroma of ripe blackberry, some mint and a touch of oak, in the reverberation of varnish. Shows on the palate with rich pressure and gripping course, well integrated wood supports the drink, rich and slightly salty, currently still young, should spend some time in the bottle, slightly persistent." - Falstaff

´I Sodi di S. Niccolò´ · IGT 2017, Castellare di Castellina, Toskana
I Sodi di S. Niccolò · IGT 2017

Castellare di Castellina, Tuscany

I Sodi di San Niccolo - the flagship of Castellare di Castellina - comes from the vineyard around the church of San Niccolo: this almost pure Sangioveto (Sangiovese) is complemented with Malvasia Nera, both from vines almost 30 years old. The color is an intense ruby red with garnet highlights. The aroma is fruity and reminiscent of wild berries, underlined by spices and some vanilla. This wine reached the top 100 of Wine Specator magazine several times and also received the coveted award of 3 glasses in the wine guide Gambero Rosso.

Barren soils are a basic requirement for high quality wines. Therefore, the sites where the vine has to fight for water and food are the most sought-after for Tuscan winemakers. The sites called 'i sodi' are in complete contrast to the 'campi', the fields. On the 'sodi' grow the most dense and refined wines. - Gerardo [TS11/18]

"The 2013 I Sodi di S. Niccolo is 85% Sangioveto (a more antique name for Sangiovese) and 15% Malvasia Nera from a single vineyard. The wine opens to a darkly saturated appearance and shows ruby, garnet and purple highlights. The bouquet is powerful but seamless at the same time with smooth transitions between dark cherry, spice, tobacco and moist clay. In the mouth, this wine shows dense extraction, but it never feels weighed down by that mass. Instead, the freshness of the fruit and the natural acidity give the wine a bright and buoyant personality. Aged in barrique for 30 months, this is a delightful Tuscan red." - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

"Sparkling ruby with a slight garnet edge. Opens with light green spicy components, coriander seed and white pepper, then it juicy cherry, some plum. On the palate lots of fine-mesh tannin with a firm core, builds in many layers, juicy cherry and fine herbal spice, firm pressure." - Falstaff

"The 2018 I Sodi di San Niccolò is the most elegant Sodi I have ever tasted, and I have tasted them all. Sodi can be quite bruiser in its youth, as the tannins are often imposing, but the 2018 is impressive because there is more than enough fruit to balance things out. Dark cherry, plum, lavender, spice and gravel build in a Sodi endowed with mind-blowing purity and exceptional finesse. Superb!" - Antonio Galloni (Vinous)
