Vintage | 2013

Good, storable wine from Italy always bears a vintage. This gives information about the harvest year of the grapes used in the wine. The grape harvest usually takes place at the beginning of autumn and ranges from the end of August to mid-October. Due to the vinification that follows, the bottled wine is available on the market the following year at the earliest. The situation is different with wines that undergo further aging in wooden barrels, which is usually followed by further extensive aging in the bottle. These wines can be stored much longer and bear their vintage not as a shelf life, but as a kind of seal of quality. Older vintages of high-quality wines (especially red wines) are traded as rarities, which make connoisseurs' hearts beat faster. - Gerardo [TS07/22]

Rosatum - 'Rose wine' was the name given in ancient Rome to the wine scented with rose oil. Extremely low yields produce a ripe rose aroma with silky richness. This sweet wine, produced only in extremely small quantities, beguiles with a seductive and flattering bouquet: intense aromas of fragrant rose petals and red berry fruits. On the palate it is rich, supple and opulent with a pleasant vanilla note. - Gerardo [TS06/14]

´Pratum´ Terlaner Weißburgunder DOC 2013, Castel Sallegg, Südtirol
Pratum Terlaner Weißburgunder DOC 2013

Castel Sallegg, South Tyrol

The grapes for the Terlan Pinot Blanc 'Pratum' come from the oldest vines of the Prey site, whose name derives from the Latin pratum. They thrive there at 550 meters above sea level on porphyry gravel and Grödner sandstone. Two thirds are aged for 9 months in stainless steel barrels while the remaining third is aged for the same time in French tonneaux barrels. The color of the wine is a pale straw yellow with greenish reflections. On the nose there are aromas of peach, exotic fruits and vanilla. On the palate, this Pinot Blanc presents minerality with balanced acidity and a long finish. - Gerardo

"Sparkling straw yellow with light gray nuances. Clearly marked nose with nicely ripened fruit, of fresh crisp apple, nectarines and walnuts. Blooms nicely on the palate, polished, lots of clear fruit, saline, builds nicely, slightly ripe notes on the finish." - Falstaff

"There is a lot of great Pinot Bianco coming out of Alto Adige these days. The 2013 Alto Adige Pinot Bianco Pratum is one of those great finds from Northern Italy. This is a steady and true wine that offers variety-specific tones of pear, Golden Delicious apple, pine nut and honey. The intensity is not obvious, but it creeps up on you slowly as the bouquet evolves in the glass. In the mouth, Pratum is well textured, bright and crisp." - Robert Parker

Rich ruby color with garnet reflections, complex and enigmatic on the nose, compact tannic structure on the palate and considerable length. - Gerardo [TS06/14]

"...the high-class Barolo Sarmassa cleared our three cups practically from the wrist. It piled its wet earth aroma pyramid on a platform of iodine and iron notes; it set the capstone with classic Nebbiolo tart fruit and balsamic nuances." - Gambero Rosso

"The Barolo Sarmassa is simply awesome. This dark, sensual beauty flows with the essence of balsamic-infused dark fruit, menthol, spices and minerals, all of which come to life in a rich, textured expression of Barolo. The aromatics seem to never end, as the wine exhibits remarkable inner perfume wedded to generous fruit, all supported by firm sturdy tannins that guarantee a long life in the cellar." - Robert Parker

Fasoli Gino, Veneto

Intense ruby color, nose present aromas of plum and rum pot, typical of dried grapes. Harmoniously combines spicy notes with hints of ripe red fruit. The fine and persistent tannins balance the high alcohol content and provide an overall very persistent finish.

The history of Pinot Noir Sande dates back to the late 80s. The extremely low yields due to the cultivation create a grape material that has an exceptionally high concentration of sugar and aromas. Subsequent grape drying further concentrates the full aromatic potential of the fruit, creating a unique wine in its category. - Gerardo

Barolo Riserva MAGNUM DOCG 2013 (1er Holzkiste), Renato Corino, Piemont
Barolo Riserva MAGNUM DOCG 2013 (1er Holzkiste)

Renato Corino, Piedmont

The Nebbiolo grapes for Renato's Barolo Riserva come from the single vineyard Vecchie Vigne, whose planting dates back to 1960. After maceration for 7 days, the wine is aged for 24 months in French oak barrels, followed by two years of bottle aging. Renato Corino is extremely consistent in weighing vintage qualities and develops his Barolo into a Riserva only in the very best years. Waiting times of more than five years are therefore not uncommon.

In the glass, this modern Barolo shows an intense garnet red color. In the fragrance of violets, cherry fruit and cloves. Accompanied by wood tones such as cigar box and tobacco and subtle ethereal notes. Full-bodied and rich on the palate, always fresh and elegant. Silky smooth tannins and long finish. - Gerardo [TS07/14]
