Appassimento | Classic

The appassimento method describes a traditional production process in which grapes are dried so that some of the water in the berries evaporates. This process results in a higher concentration of fructose and produces concentrated, opulent and slightly residual sweet wines. The duration of grape drying allows for different gradations: for example, grapes are dried for weeks, if not months, to produce a sweet passito wine. If, on the other hand, only a slightly higher alcohol content is desired, a drying period of about one week is sufficient. - Gerardo [TS09/22]

´Calto´ · Rosso Veronese IGT 2018, Marion, Venetien
Calto · Rosso Veronese IGT 2018

Marion, Veneto

Going with the flow has never been the intention of the Campedelli family, which is behind the Marion winery. This is evident not only in the unusual for the Veneto grape varieties such as Teroldego, but also in the fantasy cuvee 'Calto'. This prestigious wine is nothing other than a very personal interpretation of Amarone, which, however, cannot be marketed as such due to legal regulations. The proportion of Teroldego provides additional fire, accordingly, this wine is intense:

In the glass of very dark, ruby color with only slightly brightening edges. In the aroma of red berries, licorice and some tobacco. The palate is velvety, well structured and soft tannins. The finish is complex and persistent. - Gerardo [TS04/19]

"The 2018 Calto pulls the taster close to the glass to take in its dark blend of cloves, dried black cherries and cocoa. This is pure elegance on the palate, silky and refined, with a pretty inner sweetness and fresh acidity that guides its ripe wild berry fruits. Sweet tannins frame the experience without getting in the way, as the 2018 finishes with medium length and a resonance of orange-kissed dark chocolate. The pleasure dial is turned all the way up and yet balance is expertly maintainted. The Calto is a blend of Oseleta, Croatina, Syrah, Cabernet and Merlot that goes through 20 days of appassimento." - Antonio Galloni (Vinous)
