Blog: Cantina del Vermentino · Sardegna
When one thinks of Sardinia, one inevitably thinks of the sea, the beach, wildly romantic landscapes and wine. In particular, the autochthonous grape variety Vermentino characterizes the island like no other. Reason enough for the producers association from Monti to include these grape varieties in their company name. Menhirs, the 'Tombe dei giganti' (Tombs of the Giants) and the Nuraghi still bear witness to Sardinia's eventful settlement history. Since ancient times, the island has aroused the desires of powerful civilizations due to its strategic position, the fabulous climatic conditions and its mineral resources. Romans, Phoenicians, Balari (a local tribe) and Byzantines are just some of the names that have left their mark on the sunny island of Sardinia.
Even before the Roman civilization, the Phoenicians introduced the first vines in Sardinia and therefore in Monti. The island proved to be excellent for viticulture, as the plants thrive particularly well due to the fertile soils and the extremely favorable climate. Monti appears for the first time as a village community in public documents in 1603. Under Spanish rule, the Listan d'Andalusia grape variety, considered the mother of today's Vermentino grape, was introduced in Sardinia. Thanks to the ideal microclimate of Gallura and the convincing work of the winegrowers, Vermentino di Gallura was the only wine from Sardinia to obtain the DOC statute as early as 1975 and finally the highest classification of Italian wines, DOCG, in 1996. - Gerardo [TS02/23]
"The linchpin of this house is - as the name suggests - the Vermentino vine. Created in the mid-fifties, the Gallura cooperative has made a name for itself over the years with its high-quality products in Sardinia, especially in the northeast of the island. Around the Vermentino is grouped a series of other whole-grain products made from traditional vines. The carefully guarded grape treasure of the 350 cooperative members thrives on granite soils in hilly areas with ideal sun exposure." - Gambero Rosso
