Sonntaler is made from the oldest vines of the Kurtatsch winery, which by nature only produce low yields but are of outstanding quality. The bouquet combines aromas of heart cherries, wild strawberries and red currants, reminiscent of the first fruits of summer. The palate reveals an elegant structure that emphasizes the typical freshness and finesse of Grauvernatsch. Fine, grainy tannins lend the delicate, fruity notes a long, juicy finish. A Vernatsch with depth and structure that brings out the full potential of the grape variety. - Gerardo [TS10/23] Gerardo's Notes: Cuvée from the best and oldest Grauvernatsch vineyards. The majority on sandy loam soils between 250 and 350 meters above sea level. When the Romans advanced from the Po Valley to Bolzano in 15 BC and conquered Rhaetia, they found a viticultural culture that was more than 500 years old. It is reasonable to assume that Vernatsch was already being cultivated at that time. The name Vernatsch is derived from the Latin 'vernaculus' = 'native'. In wine literature, the noble Grauvernatsch stands out among all Vernatsch varieties. The name comes from the characteristic silky-matte gray haze that covers the skin of the berries in the last phase of ripening. Edmund Mach, the pioneer of modern South Tyrolean wine science, recognized and described the high flavor concentration of the trickled, small Grauvernatsch berries.
