Blog: Veneto | Wine region

Veneto is one of the most diverse wine-growing regions in Italy: it stretches as far west as Lake Garda and as far north as the Alps and the border with Austria. On the one hand, one third of Veneto is covered by mountain ranges; on the other hand, the region has a central plain and a wide coastal strip. Quality wines with DOC status are grown on almost 25% of this area. However, what makes the wine-growing landscape of the Veneto so special are the different soil conditions, which winemakers have always taken advantage of. Near Lake Garda, moraine gravels are often found, while on the plains it is more common to find alluvial gravels. The mountainous environment of the region, one third of which is made up of the Dolomites, has also shaped many soils. Experts agree: they speak of clean and honest wines from the production area, which are preferably drunk young. But the wine world of the Veneto is also not imaginable without opulent and alcohol-rich wines such as the famous Amarone della Valpolicella or Recioto.

Veneto stretches from the Alps to the Adriatic Sea, bordering Trentino-Alto Adige to the north, Austria and Friuli-Venezia Giulia to the east, Lombardy to the west and Emilia-Romagna to the south. The landscape of the region consists of two very different zones: a plain formed by the alluvium of the rivers and ending at the Adriatic Sea with the particular delta and lagoon formation of the Po River, and the mountains with a pre-alpine and an alpine part. The good water supply allows a strong agricultural use with the cultivation of wheat, corn, rice, sugar beets, tobacco, fruits and vegetables, olives and vines. Viticulture is concentrated in the hills from Verona to Lake Garda, with world-renowned growing areas such as Soave and Valpolicella, the Colli Berici and Colli Euganei in the province of Vicenza, Breganze in the Vicenza hills between the Brenta and Astico rivers, the gravel plain along the Piave River, and the hills of Conegliano-Valdobbiadene, where the Prosecco vines for Italy's current in-wine grow.

This puts Veneto in first place among Italy's regions, accounting for nearly 20% of Italian production of wines with designation of origin. This region is also a leader in another area: it is the undisputed leader in wine exports to Germany. Quality wines with DOC status are grown on almost 25% of the total wine-growing area. What is also special about the winegrowing landscape of Veneto are the different soil conditions, which the winegrowers have always taken advantage of. Moraine gravels are often found near Lake Garda, while alluvial gravels are more common in the lowlands. The mountainous environment of the region, one third of which is made up of the Dolomites, has also shaped many soils. Experts agree: they speak of clean and honest wines from the production area, which are preferably drunk young. But also opulent and alcoholic wines like the famous Amarone della Valpolicella or Recioto belong to the wine world of Veneto. - Gerardo [TS05/23]
