If the operational heart of the group is in San Casciano, then the soul must be hidden somewhere near Santa Christina. Here, in the recently radically modernized and expanded cantina, not only the top wines of the house, especially the Tignanello and the Solaia, are pressed and vinified, but also the vineyards of the same name that provide the basis for their grape material. Both, like Marchese Incisa's Sassicaia, whose success is partly due to Antinori, are creations of Giacomo Tachis, Italy's greatest postwar oenologist. Today, the restless retiree has been replaced by a team of oenologists led by Renzo Cotarella, longtime director of Castello della Sala. However, the actual management of the complex whole that is the House of Antinori today is indisputably in the hands of Marchese Piero himself, who is increasingly assisted by his daughters Albiera and Allegra. Even greater than his ability to steer the colossus he himself has created is certainly his feel for the developments of the Italian and international wine market, which he has demonstrated not only with his top wines, but also with Operation Galestro, as well as with the completed transition to the successor products under the name Capsula Viola, for the production of which a new vineyard with no less than 90 hectares of land was specially planted in Montelloro. But also Tignanello and Solaia have recently got competition in their own house: From the Belvedere vineyard on the Tuscan coast, from which only a Rosato has been marketed so far, has come since the 90s vintage a terrific Cabernet, the Guado al Tasso, which in the future should also heat up the neighboring, aristocratic relatives, which are called Sassicaia and Ornellaia. - Gerardo [TS06/22]
