Friuli-Venezia-Giulia Friuli-Venezia-Giulia

Friuli-Venezia-Giulia | Wine region

Friuli Venezia Giulia is the easternmost region in northern Italy, bordering Austria to the north and Slovenia to the east. Geographically, it presents itself as a landscape with two faces, the Julian and Carnic Alps in the north of the region and the plains that slope down to the Adriatic Sea in the south. Among connoisseurs, the region is considered home to excellent white wines from the hilly areas of Collio and Colli Orientali del Friuli, as well as from the other production zones of Annia, Aquileia, Carso, Grave, Isonzo and Latisana. The local white grapes Tocai Friulano, Ribolla Gialla, Verduzzo Friulano, Picolit and the red grapes Tazzelenghe, Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso are planted here, along with a large number of international noble grapes, with which the vineyards of Friuli have been planted not only since the advent of certain fashionable wines. - Gerardo [TS06/23]

"Friuli Venezia Giulia is the white wine paradise of Italy. In almost all eight growing areas of the region, but especially in the hills of the Collio and the Colli Orientali del Friuli, they have been creating top-class whites for at least three decades. The raw material for this is provided by traditional grapes such as Friulano (formerly Tocai Friulano), Ribolla and Malvasia istriana, but also, for a long time, indigenous varieties such as Pinot bianco and Sauvignon." - Gambero Rosso

´Confini´ · Vino Bianco DOC 2018, Lis Neris, Friaul

Confini · Vino Bianco DOC 2018

Lis Neris, Friuli

The uniqueness of this cuvée is deeply rooted, its originality has been consolidated over time: Pinot Grigio is the backbone of this wine, to which it gives structure, fullness, softness and warmth. The Gewürztraminer is decisive for the aromatic quality of the olfactory sensations. Riesling is crucial for the right acid balance and complexity of the taste. Of the three grape varieties, the first two are harvested late and their fermentation and aging take place in wood. In short, three grape varieties so different for a wine so unique, resulting from the combination of overripe Mediterranean notes at liqueur level with alpine hints. - Gerardo [TS08/19]

"Bright, intense straw yellow. Very intense and complex nose of ripe peach, plus grapefruit zest, passion fruit and basil. On the palate rich pressure, exceedingly rich, beautiful play with ripe fruit and rich spices, very long finish." - Falstaff

"The first two varieties are aged for one year in tonneaus. The rest is also refined for a year in steel tanks on the lees. Pale yellow color. Aromatic notes of exotic fruits, honey and rose hips on the nose. It is warm on the palate, powerful but with good acidity. The finish is long with light almond notes." - Daniele Cernilli (Doctor Wine)

Vintage Tunina · Bianco Venezia Giulia IGT 2020

Jermann, Friuli

"Straw yellow with green reflections. On the nose aromas of citrus, aroatic herbs, banana, apple, mango, passion fruit and carob. The palate combines density, fruity notes, structure, fresh acidity, elegance and length." - Daniele Cernilli (Doctor Wine)

"Bright golden yellow with light greenish reflections. Elegant and fragrant nose. Notes of white peach, apricot, orange, tangerine leaves and sage. The palate is lively, fresh and with good acidity, pleasant correspondence between nose and mouth, balanced and slightly spicy." - Falstaff

"It is worth highlighting that the grapes are already harvested together. The wine presents a sparkling straw yellow color with light golden tones; the aroma is intense, rich, of high elegance and persistent, we detect notes of honey and field flowers. On the palate it is dry, soft, very harmonious, very persistent in the finish, mainly due to its exceptionally full body. It is best enjoyed with truffle-based hors d'oeuvres, and of course with fish dishes, preferably from the cane and accompanied by a fine sauce, but dishes with white meat also go well. I found it exquisite with a salmon stuffed with parmesan and artichokes." - Daniele Cernilli

Et. Oro Spumante Brut Millesimato MAGNUM DOC 2004, Vigneti Pittaro, Friaul
Et. Oro Spumante Brut Millesimato MAGNUM DOC 2004

Vigneti Pittaro, Friuli

Pittaro produces the Spumante Millesimato only in particularly good years. The very healthy grapes must have an optimal acidity and sugar content. First the base wine is created, the high-quality basis for the sparkling wine production with a long fermentation process in the bottle. The sparkling wine matures on the fine lees for six years before these are removed in the final step and bottle maturation begins. This refining process gives the sparkling wine its particular excellence. - Gerardo

Each bottle also shows the 'Talento - Metodo Classico' symbol: This stands for 'remuage manual' or 'scuotimento manuale' (hand shaking) and emphasizes the special value of the product.

Friuli-Venezia-Giulia | Wine region | Buy at Gerardo

To a large extent, Friuli and Venezia Giulia are also mountainous regions, that area in the eastern part of Italy which is bordered by the rivers Tagliamento, Livenza and Isonzo through the Carnic and Julian Alps. A lot of livestock farming is done here and the meat pots are correspondingly abundant. Mighty steaks and 'Luganiche" - as the long thin sausages are called. Goulash, which bears all comparisons with Hungarian goulash, and last but not least the famous raw ham of San Daniele form the backbone at every festive table. And in addition the wine of the country, which thrives on sunny moraine hills. The typical lemon-yellow Friulano, for example, or the red Cabernet, which smells lightly and enticingly of raspberries. Home cooking - but in addition wines, which also at richly set table for the beautiful Friuli and for the Venezia Giulia honor.

The wine-growing zone of Friuli is located about 100 km northeast of Venice and borders in the far corner with Austria and Slovenia. The entire region is climatically quite favorable for viticulture, being protected from the north by the Alpine chain. The plain around Codroipo is the Grave del Friuli. The name, similar to Graves around Bordeaux (French: Gravier), derives from the gravelly and stony soils that predominate here. The stones store the sun's heat during the day and release it back into the environment at night. When properly managed, these soils are thus ideal for viticulture.

The Collio - also known as Collio Goriziano or High Friuli - is a wine-growing zone within Friuli Venezia Giulia and the Slovenian region of Goriska. The two most important towns in the area are Cormons and Gorizia. As one of the first wine-growing areas in Italy, the Collio was awarded the DOC (Denominazione d'origine Controllata) quality designation in 1968, which is an important part of the 'quality pyramid' of Italian viticulture. Ranges of hills and vineyards run throughout the Collio, interspersed with small villages and towns - the entire wine-growing area covers about 1,600 hectares. Among the well-known white wines are Pinot Grigio, Friulano, Sauvignon, Ribolla Gialla and Collio Bianco - a DOC Cuvee. As well as the red wines Cabernet, Merlot, Refosco and Collio Rosso. For several decades Friuli, and especially the Collio area, has been famous for some of the best white wines in Italy. - Gerardo

Friuli is considered the stronghold of Italian white wine, as evidenced by high-quality Sauvignon and Chardonnay. But also from the autochthonous vines such as Friulano and Ribolla Gialla, high quality products are created.

"In the collective wine memory Friuli - Venezia Giulia is stored as the land of great white wines. For almost 30 years, the Italian market has been asking for whites from Friuli. in general, the demand for whites has increased; only ten years ago, reds were more sought after." - Slow Wine
