Lagrein is the oldest autochthonous grape variety in South Tyrol. It thrives best on the deep, warm soils of Bolzano (Gries) and Unterlandl (Kurtatsch), which are formed from loamy-sandy deposits of rivers and streams. The 'Frauenhügel' parcel is a very warm site directly above the wine road northwest of the village of Kurtatsch. There the Lagrein reaches its optimal maturity and can bring out its full potential.
The 'Frauenhügel' has a seductive fruitiness of wild berries, elderberries, black cherries and cocoa beans. The wine accumulates balsamic tannins during aging in barrique barrels. During the subsequent aging in large wooden barrels, the noble roasted substances and the vital acidity enter into a harmonious union with the powerful fruit body. The best Lagrein is said to show not only concentration and length on the finish, but also an individual earthy note. The clayey soil is responsible for its typical site characteristics, which lend a piquant spiciness to the long, deliciously fruity finish. - Gerardo [TS07/20]
