Merlot DOC 2014

  Merlot, together with the other Bordeaux varieties Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, was introduced in South Tyrol 130 years ago. As early as 1890 - at a time when most wine was still traded in barrels - the first bottle of Merlot was put on sale by the then San Michele Provincial School. The Merlot grapevine is a decidedly deep-rooted plant that penetrates the warmest Kurtatsch sandy and gravelly soils to absorb the mountain salts from the underground water veins. The Merlot grapes come from steep slopes between 220 and 300 meters above sea level. Deep soils with a high clay content are ideal for the cultivation of the deep-rooted Merlot vine. In these hot sites, the Merlot develops its plump fruit body and the typical velvety tannins. - Gerardo [TS10/15]
