Muri Gries | South Tyrol
Today's Muri-Gries monastery was founded towards the end of the 11th century, when the Counts of Bolzano had a defensive castle built against the Trentino bishops in what was then called “Cheller”. It was not until the 15th century that the name “Gries” became established. In 1407, Duke Leopold handed the castle over to the Augustinian canons after their old monastery had been repeatedly destroyed by mudslides. The new inhabitants converted the complex into a monastery and elevated the old chapel to a church building; after the baroqueization between 1770 and 1780, they used the Gothic chapel as a library and wine cellar.
In 1841, Benedictine monks from the dissolved Muri monastery in Switzerland moved to Gries, bringing their religious rule “ora et labora” with them and soon establishing a flourishing wine trade with Switzerland. In recent decades, the distribution of open barrel wine has increasingly shifted to bottling. Under cellar master Christian Werth, the white wines today present themselves with clear, lively, acidic fruit and the red wines - especially the autochthonous Lagrein - with a concentrated structure; its Riserva is considered one of the great red wines of South Tyrol thanks to its pronounced ageing potential. - Gerardo [TS05/25]
"Muri-Gries is an impressive Benedictine monastery in the Bolzano district of Gries. Behind the massive walls, the city seems far away, the hustle and bustle stays outside. In addition to the fratres, there are also some laymen within the monastery walls. Cellar master Christian Werth is one of them. He is particularly fond of the Lagrein variety. It is important to know that Lagrein originally comes from the Grieser vineyards. The vineyards around the monastery are considered the Grand Cru of Lagrein. With his Riserva Abbey Muri, Christian Werth is one of the pioneers for the barrique aging of Lagrein. By aging in small wooden barrels, it gains suppleness and density." - Falstaff

Muri Gries | South Tyrol | Buy at Gerardo
Towards the end of the 11th century, the Counts of Bolzano established a fortified base in what is now Gries in order to counterbalance the episcopal and Trentino city of Bolzano. The name “Gries” first appears in 1185 and replaced the old name “Cheller” in the 15th century. Around 1200, the fortress was equipped with a mighty keep, which is still preserved today in the bell tower. In 1407, Duke Leopold IV of Habsburg transferred the castle to the Augustinian canons, whose monastery in the Au had been destroyed by flooding. The castle was converted into a monastery, and in 1416 a Gothic church was built in place of the old castle chapel, which was replaced by a Baroque church in 1788.
In 1845, Benedictine monks from the dissolved Muri monastery in the Swiss canton of Aargau moved into the former Augustinian canons' monastery in Gries. They revived the monastic culture and continued the winemaking tradition. In the early 20th century, open wine began to be sold via the distillery in German-speaking countries. In 1968, wines were bottled on a large scale for the first time, heralding a focus on quality. In 1985, the autochthonous Lagrein became the focus of the monastery winery.
Today, the monastery cultivates around 30 hectares of vineyards, two thirds of which are in Gries and the rest in the municipality of Eppan. With a share of 80 percent, the monastery winery is a classic red wine business, with Lagrein dominating. White wines, especially Pinot Blanc, make up around 20 percent of production. The wines are mainly sold as quality wines in 0.75 liter bottles.
The Muri-Gries monastery winery combines centuries-old tradition with modern cellar technology. The focus is on the cultivation of indigenous grape varieties and the preservation of cultural heritage. With commitment and expertise, wines are created that reflect the identity and history of the monastery. - Gerardo [TS05/25]
