Produttori del Barbaresco | Piemont
The Produttori del Barbaresco have existed since 1884 and emerged from the Cantina Sociale del Castello. The initiator and pacesetter of the cooperative was Domizio Cavazza, one of the historical figures of Piedmont viticulture. With almost one hundred hectares and 54 producers, the produttori now control almost a quarter of the cultivated area. Not only is the quality of the single-vineyard wines produced there remarkable, but also the consumer-friendly pricing policy. The Produttori are among the leading cooperatives in Italy, the wines are omnipresent in all wine guides and are not afraid of comparison with the greats of the scene.
The Produttori del Barbaresco only produce wines from Nebbiolo grapes and, in good vintages, one third of the Cru sites are vinified as Riserva. In addition to Nebbiolo and the classic Barbaresco, nine different Barbaresco Riserva wines are iconic for this successful cooperative: Asili, Montefico, Montestefano, Muncagota, Ovello, Pajè, Pora, Rabaja and Rio Sordo. - Gerardo [TS12/22]
"For some time now, the company has been working tirelessly on the quality front. From the management level to the technical department - still in the hands of the capable Gianni Testa - and down to the smallest winemaker with a few hatboxes full of Nebbiolo grapes, a serious and rigorous style is followed here at every stage of the production process." - Gambero Rosso
"There’s a lot to explore in these new releases from Produttori del Barbaresco. The 2019 Riservas show a good amount of vineyard definition, but they are also marked by a strong, somber, brooding quality. “Weather was up and down during the last phase of ripening,” Managing Director Aldo Vacca explained. “We had one good week of weather, but then conditions would deteriorate before improving again. This required us to be especially selective, so production for the crus is down about 20%.” In vintages like 2019 that are hard to read, I typically revisit the Riservas once they have had more time in bottle, which I expect to do this year. I imagine the 2019s will require a measure of patience. In the meantime, the 2020 Barbaresco will give readers a very good idea of the style of that year." - Antonio Galloni (Vinous)
